Genus
Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms as well as viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. '' Panthera leo'' (lion) and '' Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus ''Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants of an ancestral taxon are grouped together (i.e. phylogenetic analysis should c ... Longhorn Beetle
The longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae), also known as long-horned or longicorns, are a large family of beetles, with over 35,000 species described. Most species are characterized by extremely long antennae, which are often as long as or longer than the beetle's body. In various members of the family, however, the antennae are quite short (e.g., ''Neandra brunnea'') and such species can be difficult to distinguish from related beetle families such as the Chrysomelidae. The scientific name of this beetle family goes back to a figure from Greek mythology: after an argument with nymphs, the shepherd Cerambus was transformed into a large beetle with horns. Description Other than the typical long antennal length, the most consistently distinctive feature of the family is that the antennal sockets are located on low tubercles on the face; other beetles with long antennae lack these tubercles, and cerambycids with short antennae still possess them. They otherwise vary greatly in size, sha ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Lamiinae
Lamiinae, commonly called flat-faced longhorns, are a subfamily of the longhorn beetle family (Cerambycidae). The subfamily includes over 750 genera, rivaled in diversity within the family only by the subfamily Cerambycinae. Tribes The tribal level classification of the Lamiinae is still yet to be completely resolved. Lacordaire in the 1870s split the Lamiinae into nearly 94 tribes while the work of Bouchard et al. (2011) classified them into 80 tribes. Some tribes have been established for single genera and several genera have not been placed reliably within any tribe. Some of the tribes included below may not be valid and several have been synonymised. Taxa ''incertae sedis'': * genus ''Cerambycinus'' Münster in Germar, 1839 * genus ''Cypriola'' J. Thomson, 1865 * genus ''Decellia'' Breuning, 1968 * genus ''Dorcadionoides'' Motschulsky, 1857 * genus ''Falsozeargyra'' Gilmour & Breuning, 1963 * genus ''Heteropalpoides'' Fisher, 1935 * genus ''Paralamiodorcadion'' Breuning, ...
