EuroBasket 1979
The 1979 FIBA European Championship, commonly called FIBA EuroBasket 1979, was the 21st FIBA EuroBasket regional basketball championship, held by FIBA Europe. Twelve national teams affiliated with the International Basketball Federation entered the competition. The competition was hosted by Italy. Mestre, Siena, Gorizia and Turin were the venues of the event. Venues Results First round In the preliminary round, the 12 teams were split up into three groups of four teams each. Miki Berkovich
Moshe "Miki" Berkovich (or Mickey Berkowitz; he, משה "מיקי" ברקוביץ'; born 17 February 1954) is an Israeli former professional basketball player. A 193 cm shooting guard, he is considered to be one of the greatest Israeli basketball players of all time. Berkovich was named one of FIBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1991. In 1998, he was named Israel's Top Sportsmen of the 50 Year Jubilee (1948–1998). He was named one of the 50 Greatest EuroLeague Contributors, by a select panel in February 2008, and was then honored at the 2008 EuroLeague Final Four in Madrid. PalaRuffini
PalaRuffini, formerly known as Palasport di Torino, is a multi-purpose Indoor arena located in Turin, Italy. It is primarily used for basketball and volleyball games, as well as boxing matches and concerts. The arena's seating capacity is 4,500 people. History The arena was opened in 1961. Dalida had a sold-out concert in October 1970 as a part of her world tour. It hosted the latter stages of the EuroBasket 1979. It also hosted the 1992–93 season's FIBA European Cup final, in which Sato Aris defeated Efes Pilsen, by a score of 50–48. The arena was renovated in the year 2004. On 17 September 2008, the senior men's Italian national basketball team played a 2009 EuroBasket qualification game against Bulgaria, at the arena. Valdemaras Chomičius (also known as Valdemaras Homicius; born May 4, 1959) is a Lithuanian former professional basketball player for the Soviet and Lithuanian national basketball team, and an assistant coach for the Lithuanian national team. As a tall point guard he is best remembered as the captain from the "golden years" of Žalgiris Kaunas by winning three consecutive USSR League championships against the rival CSKA Moscow in 1985–1987. Stanislav Georgiyevich Yeryomin (russian: Станислав Георгиевич Ерёмин; born February 26, 1951 in Sverdlovsk, Soviet Union), last name also spelled Eremin and Yeremin, is a prominent retired Russian professional basketball player and coach. During his playing career, at a height of 1.81 m (5'11 ") tall, he played at the point guard position. He is also a retired Russian Army Colonel. Aleksander Belostenny
Alexander Mikhaylovich Belostenny (; ; February 24, 1959 – May 25, 2010) was a Ukrainian professional basketball player. He was a member of the senior Soviet national team, from 1977 to 1992, except for an absence during a single competition, EuroBasket 1987. At a height of 2.16 m (7'0 ") tall, and a weight of 120 kg (260 lbs.), he played at the center position. Club career Belostenny spent most of his club career at Budivelnyk from Kyiv, and was a leading player in its only Soviet Union League title in 1989. Anatoly Dmitriyevich Myshkin (born August 14, 1954) is a retired Soviet and Russian professional basketball player and coach. At 6 feet 9 inches (2.07 m) tall, and a weight of 210 lbs. (95 kg), he played as a combo forward (small forward-power forward). Myshkin was able to break up all of the defensive schemes in European basketball, due to his unique skill set. Vladimir Pyotrovich Tkachenko (alternate spelling: Vladimir Tkatchenko) (russian: Владимир Петрович Ткаченко; born September 20, 1957 in Sochi, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, Soviet Union) is a retired Soviet and Russian professional basketball player. Krešimir "Krešo" Ćosić (; 26 November 1948 – 25 May 1995) was a Croatian-Yugoslavian professional basketball player and coach. He was a collegiate All-American at Brigham Young University. He revolutionized basketball in Yugoslavia and was the first basketball player in the world to play all five positions. Sergei Alexandrovich Belov (russian: Серге́й Алекса́ндрович Бело́в; 23 January 1944 – 3 October 2013) was a Russian professional basketball player, most noted for playing for CSKA Moscow and the senior Soviet Union national basketball team. He is considered to be one of the best European basketball players of all time, and was given the honour of lighting the Olympic Cauldron with the Olympic flame during the 1980 Summer Olympics opening ceremony, in Moscow.
