Ethan McSweeny
Ethan McSweeny is an American theatre director. He served as artistic director of the American Shakespeare Center from 2018 to 2021. Early life and education McSweeny is a native of Washington, D.C., the son of political journalists Dorothy and William F. McSweeney, who served as Lyndon B. Johnson's deputy chief of staff and later an executive vice president of Occidental Petroleum, heading its international division. His mother served as chairwoman of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. His siblings include former Federal Trade Commission Commissioner Terrell McSweeny. McSweeny graduated from St. Albans School and received his B.A. from Columbia University in 1993 as the first graduate of the theater and dramatic art major of Columbia College. Drama Desk Award
The Drama Desk Award is an annual prize recognizing excellence in New York theatre. First bestowed in 1955 as the Vernon Rice Award, the prize initially honored Off-Broadway productions, as well as Off-off-Broadway, and those in the vicinity. Following the 1964 renaming as the Drama Desk Awards, Broadway productions were included beginning with the 1968–69 award season. The awards are considered a significant American theater distinction. Vivienne Benesch
Vivienne Benesch is a theatre director and former artistic director of the Chautauqua Theatre who is currently artistic director at North Carolina's PlayMakers Repertory Company, a position she has held since 2016. As part of her work at PlayMakers, Benesch focuses on amplifying the work of women playwrights through their @PLAY program. Benesch trained as an actor and received her MFA from Tisch School of the Arts and has been on the faculty of Juilliard. ''A Time to Kill'' is a 1989 legal thriller and debut novel by American author John Grisham. The novel was rejected by many publishers before Wynwood Press eventually gave it a 5,000-copy printing. When Doubleday published ''The Firm'', Wynwood released a trade paperback of ''A Time to Kill'', which became a bestseller. Dell published the mass market paperback months after the success of ''The Firm'', bringing Grisham to widespread popularity among readers. Doubleday eventually took over the contract for ''A Time to Kill'' and released a special hardcover edition. In 1996, the novel was adapted into a namesake film, starring Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, and Samuel L. Jackson. In 2011, it was further adapted into a namesake stage play by Rupert Holmes. The Best Man (play)
''The Best Man'' is a 1960 play by American playwright Gore Vidal. The play premiered on Broadway in 1960 and was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Play. Vidal adapted it into a film with the same title in 1964. Lee Tracy, playing Art Hockstader, repeated his performance in the 1964 film adaptation. Productions The play opened on Broadway at the Morosco Theatre on March 31, 1960, and ran for 520 performances before closing on July 8, 1961. The play starred Melvyn Douglas (William Russell) and Frank Lovejoy (Joseph Cantwell). On October 2, 1962, Lovejoy died of a heart attack in his sleep at his residence in New York City.
