Equuleus
Equuleus ( ) is a constellation of stars that are visible in the night sky. Its name is Latin for "little horse", a foal. Located just north of the celestial equator, it was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy, and remains one of the 88 modern constellations. It is the second smallest of the modern constellations (after Crux), spanning only 72 square degrees. It is also very faint, having no stars brighter than the fourth magnitude. Notable features Stars The brightest star in Equuleus is Alpha Equulei, traditionally called Kitalpha, a yellow star magnitude 3.9, 186 light-years from Earth. Its traditional name means "the section of the horse". There are few variable stars in Equuleus. Only around 25 are known, most of which are faint. Alpha Equulei (α Equulei, abbreviated Alpha Equ, α Equ), officially named Kitalpha , is a star in the constellation of Equuleus. It is a high proper-motion star only 190 light-years away. Nomenclature ''α Equulei'' ( Latinised to ''Alpha Equulei'') is the star's Bayer designation. It bore the traditional name ''Kitalpha'' (rarely ''Kitel Phard'' or ''Kitalphar)'', a contraction of the Arabic name قطعة الفرس ''qiṭ‘a(t) al-faras''—"a piece of the horse". In 2016, the International Astronomical Union organized a Working Group on Star Names (WGSN) to catalogue and standardize proper names for stars. Delta Equulei, Latinized from δ Equulei, is the second brightest star in the constellation Equuleus. Delta Equulei is a binary star system about 60 light years away, with components of class G0 and F5. Their combined magnitude is 4.47, and their absolute magnitude is 3.142. There is controversy as to the exact masses of the stars. One study puts the larger at 1.22 solar masses and the smaller at 1.17, while another pegs them at 1.66 and 1.593. The luminosity of the larger star is calculated to be 2.23 solar, and the smaller to be 2.17. System William Herschel listed Delta Equulei as a wide binary. Gamma Equulei, Latinized from γ Equulei, is a double star in the northern constellation of Equuleus. It is located at a distance of around from Earth and is visible to the naked eye with a slightly variable apparent visual magnitude of around 4.7. Epsilon Equulei, Latinized from ε Equulei, is a star system of apparent magnitude +5.23 in the constellation of Equuleus. It is located 180 light years away from the Solar System, based on its parallax. Star system Two stars make up the brighter part of the Epsilon Equulei star system. They are called Epsilon Equulei A and B and are main-sequence stars of spectral type of F5 and F6, respectively. The orbital period of this binary is about 101.5 years. Although the average separation between the two stars is about , the orbit is remarkably eccentric, at 0.705. The two stars passed their periastron in 1920. 6 Equulei is a probable (95% chance) astrometric binary star system in the northern constellation of Equuleus, located 380 light years from the Sun. It is barely visible to the naked eye as a dim, white-hued star with an apparent visual magnitude of 6.07. The system is moving further away from the Earth with a heliocentric radial velocity of +6.9 km/s. It forms a wide optical double with γ Equulei, at an angular separation of 336 arcseconds in 2011.
