English Open (table Tennis)
The English Open was a table tennis tournament in England, last staged by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in Sheffield in 2011. History The tournament was first held as the English Open in 1927 by the English Table Tennis Association. Apart from a wartime break in the early 1940s, the tournament was held every year until 1980, and then every two years until the early 1990s. In 1996, the International Table Tennis Federation, ITTF decided to include that year's English Open in Kettering as the very first event of the first ever ITTF World Tour, ITTF Pro Tour. The tournament went on to feature in the ITTF Pro Tour five more times, in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2009 and in 2011, when it was held for the last time. The record for the most men's singles tournament wins is held by Richard Bergmann, who won six titles between 1939 and 1954, including two while representing Austria and four while representing England. Sheffield
Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire, England, whose name derives from the River Sheaf which runs through it. The city serves as the administrative centre of the City of Sheffield. It is historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire and some of its southern suburbs were transferred from Derbyshire to the city council. It is the largest settlement in South Yorkshire. Viktor Barna
Viktor Győző Barna (Braun) (24 August 1911 – 27 February 1972) was a Hungarian and British champion table tennis player as well as a record five times singles World Champion. He won 41 World Championship medals and also won 20 English Open titles. Personal life Barna's birth name was Győző Braun, but, because of anti-Semitism in Hungary at the time, he changed his name to a Hungarian-sounding name. In September 1939, during the outbreak of the Second World War, he and his wife were in America. Barna returned to Europe, in order to fight against the Nazis. He joined the British army as a parachutist, and fought in Yugoslavia. After the British withdrew from Yugoslavia, Barna remained in England. After the war he settled with his wife in London. He became a British national in 1952. Later he became a representative for the Dunlop Sports Company and continued traveling the world in this capacity. Miklós Szabados
Miklós Szabados (7 March 1912 – 12 February 1962) was a Hungarian and Australian table tennis champion. Table tennis career Szabados was born in Budapest, Hungary on 7 March 1912. He first started playing table tennis when he was thirteen, and defeated Victor Barna in a tournament in 1927. From 1928 to 1935, Szabados won the world doubles title six times (1929–32 and 1934–35). He won mixed doubles three times (1930, 1931, and 1934), and was a member of the Swaythling Cup team five times (1929–31, 1934, and 1935). He won four world events in 1931: singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and the Swaythling Cup. As his mother had been born Jewish, Szabados left his studies at the University of Berlin in 1933 and fled to Paris. He moved to Britain in 1936. He won five English Open titles. Magda Gál
Magda Gál (married name Házi) (1907-1990), was a female Hungarian international table tennis player. Table tennis career She was a prolific World Table Tennis Championships medal winner and secured eight silver medals and twelve bronze medals from the 1929 World Table Tennis Championships to the 1936 World Table Tennis Championships. Gál came short of a gold medal for two reasons; first the fact that with various doubles partners she was unable to overcome the six times world champion pairing of Mária Mednyánszky and Anna Sipos, and secondly the war effectively ended her chances to compete at world level.
