Encore (1951 Film)
''Encore'' is a 1951 anthology film composed of adaptations of three short stories by W. Somerset Maugham: *"The Ant and the Grasshopper", directed by Pat Jackson and adapted by T. E. B. Clarke; *"Winter Cruise" (from the 1947 collection of Maugham stories '' Creatures of Circumstance''), directed by Anthony Pelissier, screenplay by Arthur Macrae; *"Gigolo and Gigolette" (from the 1940 collection of Maugham stories ''The Mixture as Before''), directed by Harold French, written by Eric Ambler. Maugham introduces each part of the film with a piece to camera from his garden on the French Riviera. ''Encore'' was the final film in a Maugham trilogy, preceded by ''Quartet'' and '' Trio''. Pat Jackson
Patrick Douglas Selmes Jackson (26 March 1916 – 3 June 2011) was an English film and television director. Biography Born in Eltham, to a formerly affluent family which was severely affected by the Wall Street Crash in 1929, and his father's long-term illness and early death ending Jackson's formal education. He joined the GPO Film Unit on his 17th birthday as a messenger boy after his mother persuaded her MP, Sir Kingsley Wood, then also postmaster general, to find work for her son. Rising to production assistant, he was part of the crew for the short film ''Night Mail'' (1936). The voice narrating the poem by W.H. Auden ("This is the Night Mail crossing the border, bringing the cheque and the postal order.") was Jackson himself. Jacques François
Henri Jacques Daniel Paul François (16 May 1920 – 25 November 2003), known as Jacques François was a French actor. During a sixty-year career (1942–2002) he appeared in more than 120 films and over 30 stage productions. Ronald Squire
Ronald Launcelot Squire (25 March 1886 – 16 November 1958) was an English character actor. Biography Born in Tiverton, Devon, England, the son of an army officer, Lt.-Col. Frederick Squirl and his Irish-born wife Mary (Ronald's surname 'Squire' was his stage name), he attended Wellington College and started professional life as a journalist, before training at RADA. He spent his early acting career in Liverpool repertory theatre in light comedy roles, before moving on to films. Margaret Leila Vyner, also known by her married name Margaret Williams (3 December 1914 in Armidale, New South Wales – 30 October 1993 in Reading, England) was an Australian-born model and actress who appeared in British films. Peter George Wellesley Graves, 8th Baron Graves (21 October 1911 – 6 June 1994) was an English actor. Born in London, Graves was the son of Henry Algernon Claude Graves, 7th Baron Graves. The 5th Cannes Film Festival was held from 23 April to 10 May 1952. As in the previous three festivals, the entire jury of this festival was made up of French persons, with Maurice Genevoix as the Jury President.
