The cultivation of elms in Australia began in the first half of the 19th century, when British settlers imported species from their former homelands. Owing to the demise of elms in the northern hemisphere as a result of the Dutch elm disease pandemic, the mature trees in Australia's parks and gardens are now regarded as amongst the most significant in the world. Ulmus × Hollandica 'Wredei'
The hybrid elm cultivar ''Ulmus × hollandica'' 'Wredei', also known as ''Ulmus × hollandica'' 'Dampieri Aurea' and sometimes marketed as Golden Elm, originated as a sport of the cultivar 'Dampieri' at the Alt-Geltow Arboretum, near Potsdam, Germany, in 1875. Not to be confused with two other popular cultivars named 'Golden Elm', ''Ulmus glabra'' 'Lutescens' and ''Ulmus'' 'Louis van Houtte'. Description The tree is fastigiate when young, but like its parent 'Dampieri' can become more spreading with age. It has broad, crinkled leaves clustered on short shoots; when these are young they are suffused yellow, but as the tree ages they revert to green. Ulmus 'Burnley Select'
The Chinese elm cultivar ''Ulmus parvifolia'' 'Burnley Select' was grown from seed taken from a tree at the Burnley (horticultural) College, University of Melbourne, and selected by Dr Peter May. Description This budded elm is a narrow-spreading tree with good, upright branch attachment. The original tree in Kyneton, Victoria, is about 12 m tall by 6 m broad. Unlike many other upright selections of ''Ulmus parvifolia'', the tree is reputed to have little included bark. Pests and diseases The species and its cultivars are highly resistant, but not immune, to Dutch elm disease, and unaffected by the elm leaf beetle ''Xanthogaleruca luteola''. The Chinese Elm cultivar ''Ulmus parvifolia'' 'Emer I' or 'Emerald Isle' ( trade designation: ) was cloned from a tree planted circa 1920 on the University of Georgia campus at Athens. Description Athena is a small tree rarely exceeding 6 m in height, with a slightly broader, dense and rounded crown. The leaves are a medium, glossy green, turning drab brown in autumn. The exfoliating, mottled bark is considered very attractive. Healesville, Victoria
Healesville is a town in Victoria, Australia, 52 km north-east from Melbourne's central business district, located within the Shire of Yarra Ranges local government area. Healesville recorded a population of 7,589 in the 2021 census. Healesville is situated on the Watts River, a tributary of the Yarra River. Huntingdon is a market town in the Huntingdonshire district in Cambridgeshire, England. The town was given its town charter by King John in 1205. It was the county town of the historic county of Huntingdonshire. Oliver Cromwell was born there in 1599 and became one of its Members of Parliament (MP) in 1628. The former Conservative Prime Minister (1990–1997) John Major served as its MP from 1979 until his retirement in 2001. History Huntingdon was founded by the Anglo-Saxons and Danes.
