Elizabeth Island (Danube)
Elizabeth Island in Komárno, Slovakia ( Slovakian: Alžbetin ostrov, Hungarian: Erzsébet-sziget ) is one of the islands of the Danube, which stretches almost the entire length of the city on the northern bank of the river. It is approximately 2.5 km long and 350 m wide. Elizabeth's bridge leading from Komárom was built at the eastern end of the island in 1892 and is connected to Komárno by a folding bridge built in 1968. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was connected to the mainland by filling in a wide strip of land at the western end, so that the Danube arm bordering the island from the north (which the people of Komárom call the Little Danube) became a bay. It was named - like the bridge - in honor of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who sailed from Vienna to Pest and set foot on Hungarian soil for the first time. Historically, the island was called Várkormányzói, Komárňanský, and in times of socialism the island of the Red Fleet. History The island ha ...

Elizabeth Island, New Zealand
Elizabeth Island () is the largest island in the inner Doubtful Sound, in Fiordland National Park, in New Zealand's South Island. It was created during the last glaciation, its narrow long shape aligned with the direction of the fiord. The island is uninhabited and entirely covered in dense native bush. The island was named by Captain John Grono after his brig ''Elizabeth'' in late 1822 or early 1823. The waters surrounding Elizabeth Island are protected by the Taipari Roa (Elizabeth Island) Marine Reserve. The western side of the island, facing the main flow of Doubtful Sound, contains extensive rock wall habitats. Off the southern end of the island are deep kelp beds. To the east of Elizabeth Island lies a shallow channel with high water flow, containing Olphert Cove and the mouth of Elizabeth River. This area is also home to black and red coral. Elizabeth Island (Victoria)
Elizabeth Island lies just south of French Island in Western Port, Victoria, south-eastern Australia, and just north of Phillip Island. It is over in area and is an unincorporated area of Victoria, one of the few privately owned, freehold islands in Victoria. Once used for farming, it has been converted into a holiday retreat, with the establishment of a pier and housing facilities. Access is via boat, barge or helicopter. Environment The island rises to about above sea level, and comprises fertile soil on volcanic rock and sandstone. It is covered mostly in native grass, with areas of native trees and shrubs, and a few large pine trees. There are a variety of bird species on and around the island. The area off the north eastern coast provides a feeding ground for native birds, including swans, when the tide is very low. The white-bellied sea eagle can be seen on the island at times, and nests on nearby French Island. The shoreline consists of pebblestone beach, with ...

Elizabeth Island (Cape Horn)
Elizabeth Island is the name given to an island off the tip of South America visited by Sir Francis Drake in September 1578, during his circumnavigation of the globe. The island was not seen again and is regarded as a phantom. Various suggestions have been offered as to where Drake landed.L. Ivanov and N. Ivanova. Phantom Islands. In''The World of Antarctica''.Generis Publishing, 2022. pp. 74-77. Background In 1578 Drake, with a small flotilla, was seeking to enter the Pacific to attack Spanish trade there. In August 1578, he arrived at the Straits of Magellan. By September he had found his way through and entered the Pacific Ocean, only to be blown south in a series of storms. Parted from his consorts, Drake and his ship, ''Pelican'', were at latitude 57°S (from Nuno da Silva; according to Richard Hakluyt "57 and a terce", i.e. 57°20') when, on 28 October, they encountered an island, and found shelter in a haven on its eastern shore.Felix Riesenberg ''Cape Horn'' Readers ...

Pactolus Bank
Pactolus Bank (or Burnham Bank) is (or was) a seamount in the Southern Ocean, west of Cape Horn. It was discovered by Captain W.D. Burnham of the American ship ''Pactolus'' on November 6, 1885. The bank has been proposed as a possible location for Elizabeth Island, a phantom island reported by Sir Francis Drake in October 1578. However, subsequent surveys have been unable to locate the bank, which may itself be a phantom. Discovery Burnham reported to the US Hydrographic Office that "while running before a gale off Cape Horn in command of the American ship ''Pactolus'' at 4 o'clock in the morning of 6 November 1885, the wind lulled and the sea fell, and noticing very highly discoloured water, he hove the ship to and sounded three times, obtaining each time from 67 to 70 fms. Black sand and small rocks". He then "ran South for 30 miles before the water, which all the time was very thick and yellow, resumed its natural colour". He reports "the line of demarcation was very disti ...

Elizabeth Reef
Elizabeth Reef, located at is a coral reef in the Coral Sea. The reef is separated by a deep oceanic pass, some 47 km wide, from nearby Middleton Reef, both of which are part of the underwater plateau known as the Lord Howe Rise. It is around 150 km from Lord Howe Island and 600 km from the New South Wales coast of Australia. ThEnvironment, Sport and Territories Legislation Amendment Act 1997included Elizabeth Reef in Australia's Coral Sea Islands Territory. It is the southernmost coral atoll in the world and one of the southernmost platform reefs in the world. It measures 10.5 km by 6.1 km. Despite the relatively high latitude, a wide variety of flora and fauna exists on the reef and in the surrounding waters due to their location where tropical and temperate ocean currents converge. At low tide most of the reef flat is exposed; at high tide, both a cay and a sand spit are visible. Elizabeth Island, with a diameter of about 50 m, is one me ...

Henderson Island (Pitcairn Islands)
Henderson Island (formerly also San Juan Bautista and Elizabeth Island) is an uninhabited island in the south Pacific Ocean. It is part of the Pitcairn Island Group, together with Pitcairn, Oeno, and Ducie Islands. Measuring , it has an area of and is located northeast of Pitcairn Island. It has poor soil and little fresh water, and is unsuitable for agriculture. There are three beaches on the northern end and the remaining coast comprises steep (mostly undercut) cliffs up to in height. In 1902, it was annexed to the Pitcairn Islands colony, which is now a British Overseas Territory. Henderson is one of the last two raised coral atolls in the world whose ecosystems remain relatively unaffected by human contact, along with Aldabra in the Indian Ocean. In 1988, it was designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. Ten of its 51 flowering plants, all four of its land birds and about a third of the identified insects and gastropods are endemic – a remarkable diversi ...
