Elin Engström
Augusta Eleonora "Elin" Engström (1860–1956) was a Swedish politician (Social Democrat) and trade unionist. She belonged to the pioneers of the labour movement, the Social Democratic movement, as well as the trade unionism and women's rights movement within the Social Democratic labour movement in Sweden. Life Elin Engström was the daughter of the bath house attendant Fredrik Carlsson (d. 1874); her mother was also employed as a bath house attendant. In 1878, she married the Cooper (profession) and trade unionist Jöns Engström (1849–1889). Her husband died of tuberculosis, and she was left to support their six children alone. She supported herself with several temporary jobs such as writing letters on behalf of others, washing clothes and babysitting, but was still forced to place two of her children in an orphanage: at that time, it was common for poor parents to place their children in orphanages temporarily for economic reasons, and take them back when they could affor ... Cooper (profession)
A cooper is a person trained to make wooden casks, barrels, vats, buckets, tubs, troughs and other similar containers from timber staves that were usually heated or steamed to make them pliable. Journeymen coopers also traditionally made wooden implements, such as rakes and wooden-bladed shovels. In addition to wood, other materials, such as iron, were used in the manufacturing process. The trade is the origin of the surname Cooper. Etymology The word "cooper" is derived from Middle Dutch or Middle Low German ''kūper'' 'cooper' from ''kūpe'' 'cask', in turn from Latin ''cupa'' 'tun, barrel'. Everything a cooper produces is referred to collectively as ''cooperage.'' A cask is any piece of cooperage containing a bouge, bilge, or bulge in the middle of the container. The National Association for Women's Suffrage ( sv, Landsföreningen för kvinnans politiska rösträtt, LKPR) was a part of the general suffrage movement and the national society for women's suffrage in Sweden. Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease usually caused by '' Mycobacterium tuberculosis'' (MTB) bacteria. Tuberculosis generally affects the lungs, but it can also affect other parts of the body. Most infections show no symptoms, in which case it is known as latent tuberculosis. Around 10% of latent infections progress to active disease which, if left untreated, kill about half of those affected. Typical symptoms of active TB are chronic cough with blood-containing mucus, fever, night sweats, and weight loss. It was historically referred to as consumption due to the weight loss associated with the disease. Infection of other organs can cause a wide range of symptoms.
