Elias Taban
Bishop Elias Taban (born May 10, 1955) is founder of the Sudan Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Sudan and the non-profit Water is Basic. A former child soldier, Taban holds a diploma in civil engineering and an advanced diploma in theology. He served as a colonel in the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) during the second civil war before becoming an advocate for peace who is widely respected by the governments of Sudan and South Sudan. The Bishop's ministry has focused on building wells, orphanages, schools, and health clinics, as well as advocating for the Arms Trade Treaty. From 2003 to the present, Bishop Taban has served as the president of the Sudan Evangelical Alliance. Sudan Evangelical Presbyterian Church
Sudan Evangelical Presbyterian Church (SEPC) was started by American missionaries of the Presbyterian Church in the USA in the northern part of Sudan. Missionaries were expelled in 1964. The SEPC has grown since then in northern and western Sudan as well as in South Sudan as a large percentage of SEPC members moved there in anticipation of forming a new country. The Sudan Evangelical Presbyterian Church is currently under the leadership of Bishop Elias Taban, and desires to plant churches in the Muslim northern Sudan as well as South Sudan. The church affirms the Apostles Creed, the Westminster Confession of Faith, and the Nicene Creed. Water Is Basic
Water is Basic is a non-profit NGO that drills clean water wells in South Sudan. The organization was founded in 2006 during a meeting of Sudanese church leaders, who decided that the local church's first steps after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement ought to be fulfilling physical needs. It is estimated that between 50% and 60% of the population of South Sudan has access to an improved water source, such as a hand pump, a protected well or – for a small minority – piped water supply. Water is Basic is the largest clean water non-profit organization in South Sudan. Water is Basic completed its first well on June 28, 2008 and has since completed over 500 boreholes and repaired 75 others to working condition throughout states of Central and Western Equatoria and Jonglei. Sudan People's Liberation Army
The South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF), formerly the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), is the army of the Republic of South Sudan. The SPLA was founded as a guerrilla movement against the government of Sudan in 1983 and was a key participant of the Second Sudanese Civil War, led by John Garang. After Garang's death in 2005, Salva Kiir was named the SPLA's new Commander-in-Chief. As of 2010, the SPLA was divided into divisions of 10,000–14,000 soldiers. The Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) is a multilateral treaty that regulates the international trade in conventional weapons. It entered into force on 24 December 2014. 113 states have ratified the treaty, and a further 28 states have signed but not ratified it. The ATT is an attempt to regulate the international trade of conventional weapons for the purpose of contributing to international and regional peace; reducing human suffering; and promoting co-operation, transparency, and responsible action by and among states.
