El Rito, Rio Arriba County, New Mexico
El Rito, (Spanish for ''The Little River''), is an unincorporated community in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States. Its elevation is . El Rito is located on NM 554, northwest of Española and northwest of Ojo Caliente. El Rito was one of the first Spanish settlements in the Jicarilla Apache lands north of Santa Fe, being settled about 1807. San Juan Nepomuceno Catholic Church is in the town, built between 1827 and 1832. This church has been erroneously claimed to be the oldest church in New Mexico despite multiple churches being built more than 200 year prior to it. The church was restored in the 1980s. El Rito is the home of the Carson National Forest Service – El Rito Ranger District, the El Rito Public Library, the Las Clinicas del Norte, and a campus of Northern New Mexico College. Rio Arriba County is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the population was 40,246. Its county seat is Tierra Amarilla. Its northern border is the Colorado state line. Rio Arriba County comprises the Española, NM Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Albuquerque- Santa Fe-Las Vegas, NM Combined Statistical Area. Ojo Caliente is an unincorporated community in Taos County, New Mexico, United States. Description The community lies along U.S. Route 285 near the Rio Grande between Española and Taos, approximately north of Santa Fe, the state capital. It is known for its Ojo Caliente Hot Springs. Jicarilla Apache (, Jicarilla language: Jicarilla Dindéi), one of several loosely organized autonomous bands of the Eastern Apache, refers to the members of the Jicarilla Apache Nation currently living in New Mexico and speaking a Southern Athabaskan language. The term ''jicarilla'' comes from Mexican Spanish meaning "little basket", referring to the small sealed baskets they used as drinking vessels. Northern New Mexico College
Northern New Mexico College is a public college in Española, New Mexico. History Northern was founded in El Rito, New Mexico in 1909 as the Spanish American Normal School, with the original mission of providing teacher training for the area's Spanish speakers. The college's original mission and Constitutional charter makes Northern the first Hispanic-serving institution in the United States. Northern opened its Española campus in 1971 and expanded its mission to include technical vocational programs, eventually becoming the state's first designated community college. In 2004, new legislation allowed Northern to offer a baccalaureate program in Elementary Education. Nicholas Herrera
Nicholas Herrera (born July 11, 1964) is an artist in the Northern New Mexico Santero tradition, also known as El Rito Santero ("the Saint maker of El Rito"). Life and career He was born in El Rito, New Mexico, and his New Mexican roots helped to shape him as an artist who "follows the ever-expanding folk tradition of the Northern New Mexico santero." His art is known to provoke strong emotions, as it is satirical, religious and sometimes sad. Herrera's work takes the form of statuettes, sculptures inspired by modern issues, lithographs and plaster images.
