Edward S. Anthoine
Edward S. Anthoine (c. 1882 – October 29, 1942) was an American politician and lawyer from Maine. Anthoine, a Republican from Portland, served one term (1925–26) in the Maine Senate representing Cumberland County. In December 1927, Governor Owen Brewster appointed him to reporter of decisions of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. Personal life Anthoine graduated from Bowdoin College (Class of 1902). His wife, Sara P. Anthoine (18871965), was a noted activist for women's suffrage. They had one child, Robert. Togus, formally known as the Togus VA Medical Center, is a facility operated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in Chelsea, Maine. The facility was built as a resort hotel, and housed Union veterans of the American Civil War prior to being converted to a veterans hospital. It was the first veterans facility developed by the United States government. Togus Springs Hotel Springs on the site were originally described by Native Americans as "worromontogus" (sometimes translated as "place of the mineral spring").Jones (1999) p.4 The 134-room Togus Springs Hotel was built on the site in 1858 by Rockland granite dealer Horace Beals. The Maine Republican Party is an affiliate of the United States Republican Party in Maine. It was founded in Strong, Maine, on August 7, 1854. Bowdoin College ( ) is a private liberal arts college in Brunswick, Maine. When Bowdoin was chartered in 1794, Maine was still a part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The college offers 34 majors and 36 minors, as well as several joint engineering programs with Columbia, Caltech, Dartmouth College, and the University of Maine. The Maine Supreme Judicial Court is the highest court in the state of Maine's judicial system. It is composed of seven justices, who are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Maine Senate. From 1820 until 1839, justices served lifetime appointments with a mandatory retirement age of 70.
