Education In Taiwan
The educational system in Taiwan is the responsibility of the Ministry of Education. The system produces pupils with some of the highest test scores in the world, especially in mathematics and science. Former president Ma Ying-jeou announced in January 2011 that the government would begin the phased implementation of a twelve-year compulsory education program by 2014. In 2015, Taiwanese students achieved one of the world's best results in mathematics, science and literacy, as tested by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a worldwide evaluation of 15-year-old school pupils' scholastic performance. Taiwan is one of the top-performing OECD countries in reading literacy, mathematics and sciences with the average student scoring 523.7, compared with the OECD average of 493, placing it seventh in the world and has one of the world's most highly educated labor forces among OECD countries. The retreat of the government of the Republic of China to Taiwan (), also known as the Kuomintang's retreat to Taiwan or the Great Retreat () in Taiwan, refers to the exodus of the remnants of the internationally recognized Kuomintang-ruled government of the Republic of China (ROC) to the island of Taiwan (Formosa) on 7 December 1949 after losing the Chinese Civil War in the mainland. The Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party), its officers, and approximately 2 million ROC troops took part in the retreat, in addition to many civilians and refugees, fleeing the advance of the People's Liberation Army of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Chiang Kai-shek (31 October 1887 – 5 April 1975), also known as Chiang Chung-cheng and Jiang Jieshi, was a Chinese Nationalist politician, revolutionary, and military leader who served as the leader of the Republic of China (ROC) from 1928 to his death in 1975 – until 1949 in mainland China and from then on in Taiwan. After his rule was confined to Taiwan following his defeat by Mao Zedong in the Chinese Civil War, he continued to head the ROC government until his death. Kuomintang
The Kuomintang (KMT), also referred to as the Guomindang (GMD), the Nationalist Party of China (NPC) or the Chinese Nationalist Party (CNP), is a major political party in the Republic of China, initially on the Chinese mainland and in Taiwan after 1949. It was the sole party in China during the Republican Era from 1928 to 1949, when most of the Chinese mainland was under its control. The party retreated from the mainland to Taiwan on 7 December 1949, following its defeat in the Chinese Civil War. Pingtung Tutorial Academy
The Pingtung Tutorial Academy () is a former tutorial academy in Taiping Village, Pingtung City, Pingtung County, Taiwan. History The tutorial academy was built in 1815 during the Qing Dynasty rule of Taiwan by Hsiadanshui County Deputy Governor Wu Hsing-chung and scholar Guo Tsui Lin Meng in order to revive local scholastic conducts. In 1895, the tutorial academy was transformed into a Confucius Temple. However, lack of funding to repair the building led to the abandonment of the building. During the Japanese rule of Taiwan in 1937, the Japanese government planned to relocate the temple. However, due to scholars effort in calling out for historical preservation, the academy was relocated to its current site on Shengli Road. Mingxin Academy
The Mingxin Academy () is a former tutorial academy in Jiji Township, Nantou County, Taiwan. History The academy was built in 1885 during the Qing Dynasty rule as the first private school within the area. In 1908, it moved to its current location. In 1985, the building was designated as Grade 3 historic site. Exhibitions The library is arranged with old bookshelves, desks and chairs. There are also various kinds of traditional handicrafts displayed outside the academy building. Jhen Wen Academy
The Jhen Wen Academy () is a former tutorial academy in Xiluo Township, Yunlin County, Taiwan. History The academies was originally built in 1797 as Wen Chang Temple to worship five major heavenly emperors of learning during the Qing Dynasty rule of Taiwan. It was the place where Jhen Wen Club was established for scholars to study about poetry. In 1812, an academy for classical learning was proposed and it was completed one year later and renamed Jhen Wen Academy. On 8 October 1979, the place was listed as national class 3 historic spot by the Ministry of the Interior and became a historic monument in 1985. Renovation was made for the great gate which was finished in 1989. Architecture The academy has only two layers. The main hall and the wing room are made of bricks. Huangxi Academy
The Huangxi Academy () is a former academy in Dadu District, Taichung, Taiwan. History The building was originally built in 1888 as an extended building to the existing Wenchang Temple. The building was closed during the Japanese rule of Taiwan. After the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China in 1945, the building was sold and many of its objects were stolen. In 1984, a scholar named Han Pao-teh began a research on the academy and restoration works were done to the building. Architecture The building was built with late Qing Dynasty architecture of traditional southern Fujian style. Its roof has five sections and six wallow tails. Fongyi Tutorial Academy
The Fongyi Tutorial Academy () is a former tutorial academy during the Qing Dynasty rule of Taiwan in Fengshan District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It is the largest preserved Confucian academy in Taiwan. History The building was built by Jhang Ting-cing in 1814 during Jiaqing Emperor rule. It was the venue for candidates to take the imperial examination. On 13 November 1985, the building was designated as level 3 historical monument. In 2007, the Kaohsiung City Government acquired the land title of the academy and restoration to the building commenced with a total budget of NT$ 100 million. Architecture The building was built using traditional Chinese style with wooden carving and tablets inscribed with phrases describing good manners. It consists of 37 rooms with the center altar dedicated to Wenchang Buddha, Kuichang Buddha and Changsheng Buddha. There are stone drum on both sides of the screen wall.
