East Kilbride (district)
East Kilbride (Scottish Gaelic: ''Cille Bhrìghde an Ear'', Scots: ''East Kirkbride'') was a local government district in the Strathclyde region of Scotland from 1975 to 1996, lying to the south of the regional capital Glasgow. Local Government As its name suggests, the district (one of five in the ''Lanark'' sub-region and 19 overall across the Strathclyde region, which contained more than half of Scotland's population) was centred around the new town of East Kilbride within the historic county of Lanarkshire, although its boundaries extended some way beyond the town. In the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 leading to its creation, the district's desired composition was described as: *''In the county of Lanark—the burgh of East Kilbride; in the Fourth district, the electoral division of Avondale; in the Eighth district, those parts of High Blantyre, Cambuslang South, and Carmunnock electoral divisions lying within the designated area of East Kilbride New Town.'' East Kilbride Civic Centre
East Kilbride Civic Centre is a municipal building in Cornwall Street, East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The structure was the headquarters of East Kilbride (district), East Kilbride District Council. History In the early 20th century, the population of East Kilbride was less than 4,000. The first municipal building there was the old parish chambers in Main Street which was designed in the style of a villa, built in sandstone and was completed in 1913. The design involved a symmetrical main frontage of three bays facing onto Main Street. The central bay featured a doorway with a stone surround, a Keystone (architecture), keystone and a cornice surmounted by a panel inscribed with the words "Parish Council Chambers 1913"; on the first floor, there was a single window surmounted by a segmental pediment. Strathaven
Strathaven (; from gd, Strath Aibhne ) is a historic market town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland and is the largest settlement in Avondale. It is south of Hamilton. The Powmillon Burn runs through the town centre, and joins the Avon Water to the east of the town. The current estimated population is 8,000. The town was granted a royal charter in 1450, making the Town of Strathaven a burgh of barony. The A71, which connects Edinburgh and Irvine, passes through the town. History A Roman road passes close by, on the south side of the Avon Water; it led to the Roman fort at Loudoun Hill near Darvel. The origins of Strathaven Castle are obscure, but it is believed to have been held by the Bairds until after the end of the Wars of Scottish Independence in 1357.
