Euboea (regional Unit)
Euboea ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Εύβοιας) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the administrative region of Central Greece. It consists of the islands of Euboea and Skyros, as well as a 260 km² area on the Greek mainland. Its land area is 4,167.449 km², whereas the total land area of the municipalities actually on the island Euboea is 3,684.848 km², which includes that of numerous small offshore islets ( Petalies Islands) near Euboea's southern tip. Karystos
Karystos ( el, Κάρυστος) or Carystus is a small coastal town on the Greek island of Euboea. It has about 5,000 inhabitants (12,000 in the municipality). It lies 129 km south of Chalkis. From Athens it is accessible by ferry via Marmari from the port of Rafina. After the Greek war of independence, its urban plan was laid out by the renowned Bavarian civil engineer Bierbach, in the middle of the 19th century. History Karystos apparently remained inhabited throughout the early Middle Ages. As part of the theme of Hellas, it was also seat of a bishop – a suffragan of Athens – at least since the reign of Leo VI the Wise (r. 886–912). It was among the towns listed in the 1198 ''chrysobull'' of Alexios III Angelos, where the Venetians were permitted to establish trade stations. Lichada
Lichada ( el, Λιχάδα, ''Licháda'') is a village in Euboea, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Istiaia-Aidipsos, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 39.891 km2. In 2011 its population was 181 for the village and 1,122 for the community, which includes the villages Agios Georgios (pop. 868), Vasilina, Gregolimano, Kavos, Kokkinias and the uninhabited islands Monolia and Strongyli. Lichada is located at the western tip of Euboea. It is 10 km north of Agios Konstantinos, 16 km west of Aidipsos, 37 km east of Lamia and 75 km northwest of Chalcis. Lichada suffered damage from the 2007 Greek forest fires. Istiaia
Istiaia ( el, Ιστιαία, , before 1913: Ξηροχώρι - ''Xirochori''2.537 Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Istiaia-Aidipsos, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 181.299 km2. At the 2011 census the population was 7,091 for the municipal unit and 5,522 for the community. The town is located in the northwestern end of the island Euboea, 5 km from the north coast, and north of the mountain Telethrio. It was the capital of Istiaia Province until its abolishment in 2006. Visitor attractions of Istiaia include the Museum of Natural History and the church of Agios Nikolaos. Aidipsos
Aidipsos ( el, Αιδηψός, ) is a village and a former municipality in Euboea, Greece. The municipality Aidipsos was founded in 1997 by the merger of the municipality Loutra Aidipsou with the communities Agios and Gialtra. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Istiaia-Aidipsos, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 115.461 km2. 80 of Greece's 752 hot springs are located in Aidipsos, making it a popular tourist destination. The spas date back more than 20,000 years. In 2011 the population was 6,141. Amarynthos
Amarynthos ( Greek: Αμάρυνθος, , also called Βάθεια ''Váthia''), is a coastal town and a former municipality in Euboea, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Eretria, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 109.909 km2. In 2011 its population was 3,672 for the town and 6,723 for the municipal unit. The Amarynthos is 8 km east of Eretria, 27 km southeast of Chalcis, 63 km northwest of Karystos and 10 km north of Kalamos, across the gulf. Avlida ( el, Αυλίδα, ) or Aulis () a former municipality in Euboea regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Chalcis, of which it is a municipal unit. The population was 9,300 inhabitants at the 2011 census, and the land area is 122.235 km². The seat of the municipality was in Vathy. Although part of the Euboea regional unit, it is not located on the island Euboea, but on the mainland, attached to the northeastern part of Boeotia. Nea Artaki
Nea Artaki ( el, Νέα Αρτάκη) is a town and a former municipality on the island Euboea, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is a municipal unit, part of the municipality Chalcis. The municipal unit has an area of 23.015 km2. Nea Artaki is located north of Chalcis. The town was founded in 1923 by Greek refugees from the town of Erdek (Greek: Αρτάκη - ''Artaki''). The Greek National Road 77 links it with Chalcis and northern Euboea. Nea Artaki is located in a plain that is surrounded with mountains to the east and the North Euboean Gulf lies to the west.
