Esther (; ), originally Hadassah (; ), is the eponymous heroine of the Book of Esther in the Hebrew Bible. According to the biblical narrative, which is set in the Achaemenid Empire, the Persian king Ahasuerus falls in love with Esther and marries her. His grand vizier Haman is offended by Esther's cousin and guardian Mordecai because of his refusal to bow before him; bowing in front of another person was a prominent gesture of respect in Persian society, but deemed unacceptable by Mordecai, who believes that a Jew should only express submissiveness to God. Bernard Etkin
Bernard Etkin, (May 7, 1918 – June 26, 2014) was a Canadian academic and one of the world's recognized authorities on aircraft guidance and control. Education and academic work Born in Toronto, Ontario, Etkin was a graduate of the University of Toronto and was Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the university in the 1970s. Efron Etkin (; 29 December 1952 – 16 January 2012) was an Israeli actor and voice actor. Biography Born in Hatzor, Etkin was born to a family of three children. His father, Zvi Etkin was a member of the Haganah and also taught the Arabic language. Etkin studied acting at the Tel Aviv University and also went to the United States to continue his acting studies at the HB Studio in New York City. He also served as an officer in the Israeli Air Force. Etkin was a frequent performer at the Habima Theatre. Eugenia Etkina is a retired Russian and American scholar of physics education, focused on teacher preparation and professional development, and an author of physics textbooks centered on the Investigative Science Learning Environment framework for physics education and the Physics Union Mathematics high school curriculum. She is a distinguished professor of physics education, emeritus, in the Graduate School of Education of Rutgers University. Mariano Etkin (1943–2016) was an Argentine composer. Life Etkin was born in Buenos Aires. He studied with , Maurice Le Roux and Gerardo Gandini. And, at the Utrecht University, with Gottfried Michael Koenig, and also at the Juilliard School with Luciano Berio (under an Organization of American States fellowship). Nina Etkin
Nina Lilian Etkin (June 13, 1948 – January 26, 2009) was an American anthropologist and biologist. Etkin was noted for her work in medical anthropology, ethnobiology, and ethnopharmacology. She studied the relation between food and health for over thirty years. Her work involved complementary and alternative medicines for prevention and treatment in Hawai‘i; the use of ethnomedicines in Indonesia; and health issues in Nigeria. She won numerous grants and awards from national and international agencies and published several books as well as over 80 professional articles in peer reviewed journals. Oran Etkin is a jazz and world music musician. Biography A native of Israel, after his family moved to Boston he took piano lessons when he was five years old. At fourteen he studied clarinet with Yusef Lateef and George Garzone. He attended Brandeis University and concentrated on economics and classical clarinet. He received a master's degree in jazz from the Manhattan School of Music. He plays alto clarinet, bass clarinet, and tenor saxophone. After leaving the Manhattan School of Music, he was hired as a teacher in New York City. Inspired by that experience, Etkin invented a teaching method called Timbalooloo to teach music to children as young as three years old. In 1998, Etkin took an African dance class in Boston that was taught by Joh Camara, a percussionist from Mali. Róża Etkin (1908 in Warsaw – 16 January 1945 in Warsaw), known after marriage as Róża Etkin-Moszkowska, was a Polish pianist. Etkin, who showed considerable talent early in life, was the youngest contestant at the inaugural I International Chopin Piano Competition, where she was awarded the 3rd prize. She was a pupil of Aleksander Michałowski and Zbigniew Drzewiecki in Warsaw. During the early 1930s she settled in Berlin to study with Professor Moritz Mayer-Mahr. She developed a very large repertoire, including the late sonatas of Beethoven, the Rachmaninov concerti, the Goldberg Variations, Prokofiev's and Karol Szymanowski's works and Godowsky's arrangements of the Chopin Waltzes.
