He was the Artistic Director of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet from 2002 until 2012. Giljane held the post of head of the ballet from August 2002 and was part of the administration of Den Norske Opera & Ballet. Since 2015 he has been a faculty member of the Juilliard School in New York City. Giljane trained under Eva Haalke, with Den Norske Opera's ballet school (1976–78) and then at the School of American Ballet. From 1981–95 he was a dancer with the New York City Ballet. Oslo ( , , or ; sma, Oslove) is the capital and most populous city of Norway. It constitutes both a county and a municipality. Eva Haalke
Eva Haalke (née Hansen; 2 April 1912 – 24 October 2003) was a Norwegian dancer and ballet teacher. She was born in Trondheim, and was a sister of painter Hjalmar Haalke, and sister-in-law of novelist Magnhild Haalke. She started learning ballet when she was nine years old. As a young woman she performed in a number of operas and operettas, at various Norwegian theatres. After the Second World War she studied the Vaganova method in London. In 1950 she founded a ballet school in Oslo. Mari Boine (born Mari Brit Randi Boine, 8 November 1956) is a Norwegian Sámi singer. She combined traditional Sámi joik singing with rock. In 2008, she became a professor of musicology at Nesna University College. Biography Mari Boine was born and raised in Gámehisnjárga, a village on the river Anarjohka in Karasjok municipality, Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. Boine's parents were Sámi who made their living from salmon fishing and farming. She grew up steeped in the natural environment of Sápmi, but also amidst the strict Laestadian Christian movement with discrimination against her people: for example, singing in the traditional Sami joik style was considered "the devil's work".
