Ernest G. Southey
Ernest G. Southey (January 23, 1874 - November 20, 1945) was an American architect from Bridgeport, Connecticut. Having begun his practice by 1902, and continuing until his 1945 death, Ernest G. Southey had a career spanning almost the entire first half of the twentieth century. During that period, he designed a number of major residences, commercial buildings, and the Bassick High School. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects from 1916, and was cited for his architectural achievement during Bridgeport's centennial celebration in the 1930s. Southey's son, David Ludgate Southey (1911-1974), was also an architect. At least one of his designs has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and several others are contributing properties in historic districts. Danbury is a city in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States, located approximately northeast of New York City. Danbury's population as of 2022 was 87,642. The Bridgeport Downtown South Historic District encompasses the historic elements of the southern part of downtown Bridgeport, Connecticut. It is in size, roughly bordered on the east by Main and Middle Streets, on the north by Elm Street, the west by Broad Street, and the south by Cesar Batalla Way. This area includes the highest concentration of buildings developed in the commercial downtown between about 1840 and the 1930s, the period of the city's major growth as a manufacturing center, and includes a diversity of architectural styles representative of that time period. The Golden Hill Historic District encompasses a well-preserved formerly residential area on the northwest fringe of downtown Bridgeport, Connecticut. Located mainly on Lyon Terrace, Gold Hill Street, and Congress Street, the district includes 11 formerly residential buildings now mainly in commercial use, which were built between about 1890 and 1930. It also includes Bridgeport City Hall (a 1916 high school building which has been repurposed), and the Golden Hill United Methodist Church. Seaside Park (Connecticut)
Seaside Park, located in Bridgeport, Connecticut, is a long crescent-shaped park bordering Bridgeport Harbor, Long Island Sound, and Black Rock Harbor. The park lies within Bridgeport's South End neighborhood. History As Bridgeport rapidly grew in population in the 19th century, residents recognized the need for more public parks. In 1863, ''The Standard'' urged the creation of one or more public parks in the city and a movement to create a park along Long Island Sound and Black Rock Harbor began. By 1864, P. T. Barnum and other residents had donated approximately to create Seaside Park, gradually increased to about by 1884. The Compo–Owenoke Historic District encompasses an early 20th-century summer resort beach community in Westport, Connecticut. Developed between 1910 and 1940, the Compo Beach area contains one of the largest assemblages of period resort architecture in Westport, and one of the best such collections in the region. The district, covering south of Compo Road South, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Description and history Compo and Owenoke occupy the southern portion of a peninsula extending into Long Island Sound south of downtown Westport. Westport is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States, along the Long Island Sound within Connecticut's Gold Coast. It is northeast of New York City. The town had a population of 27,141 according to the 2020 U.S. Census. History The earliest known inhabitants of the Westport area as identified through archaeological finds date back 7,500 years. Records from the first white settlers report the Pequot Indians living in the area which they called ''Machamux'' translated by the colonialists as ''beautiful land''. The Old Town Hall is a historic former municipal building at 90 Post Road East in Westport, Connecticut. Built in 1908 as the town's first purpose-built municipal office building, it is unusual architecturally for using cobblestones within a design that is, overall, Classical Revival in style. Danbury High School
Danbury High School is a public high school in Danbury, Connecticut, with approximately 3000 students. It is part of the Danbury Public Schools district. Despite Danbury's population of 86,518 (as of 2020), there is only one public high school, along with several small private schools, and one vocational high school in the city. The school is located in a suburban, residential neighborhood atop a hill that overlooks most of the city. Danbury High School is supplemented by a magnet program called the Alternative Center for Excellence. This program provides a Danbury High School diploma but exhibits additional criteria not required by most local institutions. Bassick High School
Bassick High School is a US public trade high school located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. History In 1924, the Bassick family home was demolished to begin construction for a school. The E & F Construction Company was awarded the contract after submitting a bid for $692,946. Architect Ernest G. Southey created a Georgian style plan set back 100 feet from Fairfield Avenue leaving "ample room to the south of the school for a large athletic field." Bassick Junior High School opened in 1929 with 1,034 students in grades seven through nine and was soon thereafter converted to a senior high school.
