Erie Otters
The Erie Otters are a major junior ice hockey team based in Erie, Pennsylvania. They are members of the Midwest division of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), one of only three American teams in the league. The team's name refers to the North American river otter common to Lake Erie. The Otters play at Erie Insurance Arena in downtown Erie, next door to UPMC Park and the Warner Theatre. The Otters have twice captured the prestigious J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL champions in the 2001–02 and 2016–17 seasons, and won the Wayne Gretzky Trophy as Western Conference champions in the 2014–15 and 2016–17 seasons. WERG
90.5 WERG is an alternative formatted college radio station in Erie, Pennsylvania. The station is owned by Gannon University. Its transmitter is located in Summit Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania. History On December 1, 1972, at 6pm, WERG signed on at 89.1 FM with an effective radiated power of 10 watts. Gannon University students operate WERG during the week; the station maintains broadcast operations over the weekends with the help of community volunteers who run alternative programming for the Erie community. One of these shows, Super Soul Saturday, has become an institution in Erie radio and an integral part of WERG's weekend programming schedule. Major technical upgrades came in 1980 when WTAE-FM radio in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, donated a 1949 Westinghouse FM-3 transmitter to Gannon. The Hamilton Spectator Trophy is awarded annually by the Ontario Hockey League to the team that finishes the regular season with the best record. Wayne Gretzky Trophy
The Wayne Gretzky Trophy is awarded annually to the champion of the Western conference playoffs in the Ontario Hockey League. It was first awarded in 1999. The winning team competes for the J. Ross Robertson Cup in the OHL finals versus the Bobby Orr Trophy winner. It is named in honour of Wayne Gretzky. He played for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 1977–78 OHL season, scoring 70 goals as a rookie, establishing an OHL record for most goals by a 16-year-old that stood until 2007. Gretzky also had 112 assists, and 182 points that season, the second highest point total in an OHL season. Warner Theatre (Erie, Pennsylvania)
The Warner Theatre is an Art Deco and French Renaissance-styled theater located in downtown Erie, Pennsylvania in the United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The Warner was designed by Chicago-architects Rapp and Rapp and was opened in 1931. It was used as a movie theater until 1976, when it was sold to the City of Erie. In the early 1980s, Erie converted the theater to a performing arts center, which has become the focus of a downtown revival. The theater features a 65-foot-by-28-foot proscenium stage and is complemented by crushed velour, gold and silver leaf, and gold-backed French mirrors. Today it hosts concerts and Broadway theatre performances and is home to the Erie Philharmonic and the Lake Erie Ballet. The Warner's Grand Lobby has capacity for up to 500 persons for a reception. UPMC Park
UPMC Park, formerly known as Jerry Uht Park, is a baseball park located in Erie, Pennsylvania. It is the home of the Double-A Erie SeaWolves of the Eastern League, the city's Minor League Baseball (MiLB) franchise. The SeaWolves are affiliated with the Detroit Tigers Major League Baseball team. It hosted its first regular season game on June 20, 1995, in which major league veteran José Guillén hit a home run to ensure a SeaWolves victory over the Jamestown Jammers. The park replaced Ainsworth Field, built in 1947, and features a natural grass and dirt playing field.
