Eric Low
Eric Low Siak Meng (; 1948 – 3 January 2023) was a Singaporean politician and a general manager. Formerly a member of the People's Action Party (PAP), he decided not to contest for the 2011 general election. Political career Goh Chok Tong was tasked with the "special assignment" of helping Low win Hougang SMC in the 2006 general elections, along with Sitoh Yih Pin, the PAP candidate for Potong Pasir SMC. Low and Sitoh were promised more latitude in the Parliament and freedom from being subjected to the party whip if he won Hougang SMC. He contested the Hougang SMC in both the 2001 Singapore general election and the 2006 general election, losing both times to Low Thia Khiang from Workers' Party. In 2011, Low announced that he would not contest Hougang SMC in the coming general election. People's Action Party
The People's Action Party (PAP) is a major Conservatism, conservative political party in Singapore and is the governing contemporary political party represented in the Parliament of Singapore, followed by the opposition Workers' Party of Singapore, Workers' Party (WP). The PAP was established in 1954 as a conventional centre-left party. The Bintang Bakti Masyarakat (English: Public Service Star) is a Singaporean orders and decorations, Singaporean decoration instituted in 1963. It is awarded to any person who has rendered valuable public service to the people of Singapore, or who has distinguished themselves in the field of arts and letters, sports, the sciences, business, the professions and the labour movement. Bars may be issued for further service. Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters BBM. The Bintang Bakti Masyarakat was first awarded in 1963. There were 88 recipients of the initial award which included community leaders, artists, social workers and trade union leaders. The ''Pingat Bakti Masyarakat'' (English: Public Service Medal) is a Singaporean orders and decorations, Singaporean national honour. It was instituted in 1973. The medal may be awarded to any person who has rendered commendable public service in Singapore or for their achievement in the field of arts and letters, sports, the sciences, business, the professions and the labour movement. Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters PBM. Low Thia Khiang
Low Thia Khiang (; born 5 September 1956) is a Singaporean former politician and the secretary-general of the Workers' Party (WP) between 2001 and 2018. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Hougang Single Member Constituency (SMC) between 1991 and 2011, and the Bedok Reservoir–Punggol division of Aljunied Group Representation Constituency (GRC) between 2011 and 2020. Low was one of the two opposition MPs in Parliament between 1997 and 2011. Low made his political debut in the 1991 general election where he contested in Hougang SMC as a WP candidate. He was appointed secretary-general of the Workers' Party on 27 May 2001. 2011 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 7 May 2011. President S. R. Nathan dissolved parliament on 19 April 2011 on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Voting is mandatory in Singapore and is based on the first-past-the-post system. Elections are conducted by the Elections Department, which is under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister's Office. 2006 Singapore General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 6 May 2006. President S.R. Nathan dissolved parliament on 20 April 2006 on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong three weeks before the election. The People's Action Party (PAP) won 66.6% of the overall votes and gained 82 out of 84 seats. The PAP held the office of Prime Minister for a twelfth consecutive term.
