Emmet D. Boyle
Emmet Derby Boyle (July 26, 1879 – January 3, 1926) was an American politician who was the 13th Governor of Nevada. He was a member of the Democratic Party. Biography Boyle was born on July 26, 1879, in Gold Hill, Nevada, making him the first governor of Nevada to be born in the state. He was a mining engineer, and was the Governor of Nevada from 1915 to 1923. He also served as president of the Reno Chamber of Commerce. As governor, he presided over various laws concerning working conditions and gained prominence for his opposition to boxing. In 1918, he refused to allow Fred Fulton and Jess Willard to fight in the state. After retiring as governor, he served as publisher of the Nevada State Journal. Jess Willard
Jess Myron Willard (December 29, 1881 – December 15, 1968) was an American world heavyweight boxing champion billed as the Pottawatomie Giant. He won the world heavyweight title in 1915 by knocking out Jack Johnson (boxer), Jack Johnson. Willard was known for size rather than skill, and though he held the championship for more than four years, he rarely defended it. In 1919, when he was 37 years old, he lost the title in an extremely one-sided loss by declining to come out for the fourth round against Jack Dempsey, who became a more celebrated champion. Soon after the bout, Willard began accusing Dempsey of using something with the effect of a knuckle duster. Dempsey did not grant Willard a return match, and at 42 years old he was KO'd, following which he retired from boxing, although for the rest of his life he continued to claim Dempsey had cheated. Fred Tobias Fulton, nicknamed "The Rochester Plasterer", or "The Minnesota Plasterer" (April 19, 1891 – July 7, 1973), was a top ranked American heavyweight professional boxer who competed from 1913 to 1933. Known for his size and strength, Fulton stood over six and a half feet tall and won 90 percent of his fights by knockout. His most remembered fights were his first round stoppage loss to future champion Jack Dempsey, and his two victories over Sam Langford. Biography He was born in Blue Rapids, Kansas on April 19, 1891. Tasker Lowndes Oddie (October 20, 1870 – February 17, 1950) was an American attorney and politician who served as the 12th Governor of Nevada and a United States Senator. He was a member of the Republican Party. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Oddie was educated in Brooklyn, then lived and worked for several years in Nebraska and East Orange, New Jersey. After graduating from New York University School of Law in 1895 and practicing law in New York City, in 1898 he moved to Nevada. He worked in Nevada as the attorney and business agent for wealthy businessman Anson Phelps Stokes, and became active in silver and gold mining. Oddie's mining investments made him wealthy, and he expanded his holdings to include ownership takes in farms, railroads, banks, and cattle ranches.
