Elise Neumann Hedinger (1854-1923) was a German painter known for her still life painting. Biography Hedinger née Neumann was born on 3 July 1854 in Berlin, Germany. She studied in Germany and France with Charles Hoguet, Albert Hertel, Eugen Bracht, and Karl Gussow. Albert Hertel
Albert Hertel (19 April 1843, Berlin - 12 February 1912, Berlin) was a German landscape painter. Life and work He began his studies at the Berlin University of the Arts. At the age of twenty, he went to Rome and stayed there for almost four years. In addition to studying the masters, he became interested in landscape painting and took lessons from Heinrich Dreber. In 1867, he returned to Berlin. He was only there for a year, however, then went to study at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Oswald Achenbach, a well known landscape painter. In 1875, he was appointed a lecturer at the Berliner Kunstakademie, and placed in charge of the landscape painting studio. After two years there, he began working as a free-lance artist. In addition to his landscapes, which he usually painted "en plein air", he created still-lifes and some genre pieces. Eugen Bracht
Eugen Felix Prosper Bracht (3 June 1842 – 5 November 1921) was a German landscape painter. Biography Bracht was born in Morges, Waadt (near Lake Geneva in Switzerland) of German parents. His family later moved to Darmstadt, Germany, where he became a pupil of Karl Ludwig Seeger at the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe and later studied under Hans Gude in Düsseldorf. Dissatisfied with his work, he moved to Berlin in 1864 and became a merchant, but in 1876 he renewed his interest in painting and joined his former teacher Seeger in Karlsruhe. A late Romanticist painter, Bracht was known for his moody landscapes and coastal scenes in North Germany, and began a sketching trip through Syria, Palestine and Egypt from 1880 to 1881. In 1882, he became a Professor of Landscape Painting at the Prussian Academy of Arts. Karl Gussow
Karl Gussow (25 February 1843, Havelberg – 27 March 1907, Munich) was a German painter and university professor. Life and work His early inclination to art was encouraged by his family so, as soon as he completed his secondary schooling, he was enrolled at the newly founded Grand-Ducal Saxon Art School, Weimar. This led to studying the Dutch Masters in the studios of the history and genre painter, Arthur von Ramberg. He later worked with the Belgian history painter, Ferdinand Pauwels, who had a decisive influence on his style. In 1867, after leaving Pauwels' studio, he went to Munich to continue his studies with Karl von Piloty, but was there for only a short time before going to Italy, then returning to Weimar. In 1870, he sent some works to an exhibition in Berlin. Women artists competing for awards at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition submitted their work to juries at appropriate buildings. Women artists were represented in the Palace of Fine Arts, along with their fellow countrymen. Women exhibited painting and sculpture throughout the Fair. The Woman's Building did not have a juried exhibition, but lobbied to have artists of the day submit their work for the "Court of Honor". The Woman's Building (Chicago)
The Woman's Building was designed and built for the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893 under the auspices of the Board of Lady Managers. Of the twelve main buildings for the Exhibition, on June 30, 1892 The Woman's Building was the first to be completed. It had exhibition space as well as an assembly room, a library, and a Hall of Honor. The ''History of the World's Fair'' states, "It will be a long time before such an aggregation of woman's work, as may now be seen in the Woman's Building, can be gathered from all parts of the world again." Building Fourteen women architects submitted designs for the Woman's Building. The Board of Architects selected Sophia Hayden's design. The design was for a three story building done in Italian Renaissance style with Corinthian columns.
