''Elisabeth of Austria'' () is a 1931 German historical drama film directed by Adolf Trotz and starring Lil Dagover, Paul Otto, and Maria Matray. It is a biopic of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. It was shot at the EFA Studios in Berlin with sets designed by the art director Franz Schroedter. Plot Empress Elizabeth of Austria (Lil Dagover) is a free spirit expected to conform herself in a regal manner and wed to Franz Joseph (Paul Otto Paul Otto Schlesinger (8 February 1878 – 25 or 30 November 1943) was a German film actor and director. Adolf Trotz
Adolf Trotz (September 6, 1895 – after 1937) was a German film director. He was known for his films in the '' Mittelfilme'' (mid-budget) genre. Early life Trotz was born in Janow in what is now Poland in Silesia. He originally studied pharmacy and philosophy, but began a career in film after the first World War. Career Trotz's 1932 film ''Rasputin, Demon with Women'' was certified as "artistically valuable"; however, in 1933, Joseph Goebbels banned the film throughout Germany and ordered all prints and advertising materials to be destroyed. Trotz smuggled both the original pictorial and soundtrack negatives to a farmhouse in Austria. At one point in 1933, he was part of the wave of German émigrés who fled to Paris. In 1936, Goebbels banned his 1933 film ''Ways to a Good Marriage'', which depicted the path to happiness as advice based on the sexology research done by Magnus Hirschfeld, and Trotz fled to Spain in 1936. Eugen Burg (6 January 1871 – 17 April 1944) was a German actor. His daughter was Hansi Burg. Burg was a close friend of the actor Hans Albers. Burg was born Eugen Hirschburg into a Jewish family, but later converted to Protestantism. He was banished from the film industry when the Nazi Party came to power in Germany. Ida Wüst (; 10 October 1884 – 4 October 1958) was a German stage and film actress whose career was prominent in the 1920s and 1930s with Universum Film AG (UFA). Life and career Little is known about Ida Wüst's early childhood. She discovered early the world of theater, and decided to make it her career. After attending secondary school in Frankfurt am Main, Wüst took acting lessons from Thessa Klinghammer and at the age of 16 received her first engagement at the StadtTheatre of Colmar, and further stage productions in Bromberg, and in 1904 performed extensively in Leipzig. Ludwig Stössel (12 February 1883 – 29 January 1973) was an Austrian actor. He was one of many Jewish actors and actresses who were forced to flee Germany when the Nazis came to power in 1933. Biography Stössel began performing on the stage in Austria and Germany when he was only 17.
