Elastica
Elastica were an English rock band formed in London in 1992 by guitarist/singer Justine Frischmann and drummer Justin Welch after their departure from Suede. The band was stylistically influenced by punk rock, post-punk and new wave music. The band's members changed several times, with Frischmann and Welch being the only members who remained in Elastica from its formation to its dissolution. Elastica quickly rose to prominence after the release of their debut single " Stutter" in November 1993, and the band's next three singles charted in the Top 20 of the UK Singles Chart. Their debut album '' Elastica'' (1995) was an immediate success and broke records for the fastest-selling debut album in the UK; the album also found success in the United States and produced the band's highest-charting US Hot 100 hit, " Connection". ''Elastica'' is the debut studio album by English alternative rock band Elastica. It was released in March 1995 through Deceptive Records in the UK and DCG/Geffen Records internationally. The album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. This is the only album to feature the original line-up, and guitarist Donna Matthews. Reception ''Elastica'' was well-received critically. The ''Los Angeles Times'' opined that "the smart, sassy savagings of losers and poseurs are a refreshing advance from grunge's gloomy self-absorption." Connection (Elastica Song)
"Connection" is a song by Britpop group Elastica. It was originally released on 10 October 1994 as a single and included on their Elastica (album), self-titled debut album in 1995. The song debuted and peaked at number 17 on the UK Singles Chart and became one of the few Britpop songs to gain popularity in North America, reaching number 53 on the US Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100, number two on the ''Billboard'' Alternative Songs, Modern Rock Tracks chart, and number nine on the Canadian ''RPM (magazine), RPM'' 100 Hit Tracks chart. In an interview with Zane Lowe, Damon Albarn mentions playing the synthesizer intro on a Yamaha QY10 handheld sequencer. ''The Menace'' is the second and final studio album by English rock band Elastica, released in the UK via Deceptive Records on 3 April 2000, and internationally on 22 August 2000 through Atlantic Records. Background After the release of their eponymous debut record in 1995, the band started touring and in the process started partying ferociously and dabbling in drugs. The first attempt to record their second work was in France and Ireland at the end of 1996, but internal problems caused the departure of members (including vocalist/guitarist Donna Matthews and bassist Annie Holland) and the temporary dissolution of the group. Leader Justine Frischmann, who had recently broken up with boyfriend Damon Albarn of Blur, started to work on Brian Eno-influenced mood music with flatmate Loz Hardy of Kingmaker, resulting on tracks like "Miami Nice" and "My Sex", which ended up on the album. Annie Holland
Annabel "Annie" Holland (born 26 August 1965) is a British musician. She is best known as the bass guitarist and co-founder of the Britpop band Elastica. Holland had an Elastica song titled in her honour. Justine Frischmann
Justine Elinor Frischmann (born 16 September 1969) is an English artist and retired musician. After forming Suede, she co-founded the Britpop band Elastica before retiring from the music industry and pursuing a career as an artist. Early years Frischmann was born on 16 September 1969 in Twickenham, England, the daughter of Wilem Frischmann, a Hungarian Holocaust survivor who is the former chairman of the Pell Frischmann company of consulting engineers, and a Russian mother. Her parents are both Jewish. She grew up in Twickenham, Greater London, and attended St Paul's Girls School, before studying at the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London from 1989 to 1993. Justin Welch
Justin Steven Welch (born 4 December 1972) is an English musician, best known as the drummer in Elastica, Suede, and later the drummer in Lush. Welch is currently the drummer of The Jesus and Mary Chain. Biography Welch moved to London in his late teens and studied at London's Drumtech drum school. He played drums in a number of bands in the early 1990s, including an early line-up of Suede (where he would first meet Justine Frischmann) and Spitfire. In 1996, Welch also formed the Britpop supergroup Me Me Me with Blur bassist Alex James and The Lilac Time frontman Stephen Duffy, who released one single "Hanging Around". Elastica split in 2001 and Welch moved to Devon where he taught drums in secondary and primary schools. In 2012, he was in a duo with friend and former EMF frontman James Atkin called 'Asbo Kid'. Donna Matthews
Donna Lorraine Matthews (born 2 December 1971) is a Welsh musician who was the lead guitarist of the Britpop band Elastica. Music career When she was 20, Matthews answered an advert in ''Melody Maker'' for a guitarist with a new band. She became a member of Elastica, subsequently becoming one of their songwriters and credited for many of their tracks. Matthews left Elastica in the spring of 1999 after the band's output had waned and she had developed a heroin habit. In April 2000 she briefly rejoined the band to play one track, " Connection", at the London Kentish Town Forum after being invited out of the audience by Elastica singer Justine Frischmann. After shaking off her drug addiction she formed an unnamed band with bassist Isabel Waidner and Catrin Jones. In May 2003 they produced and sold 1000 copies of a single, called "L.O.V.E." Britpop
Britpop was a mid-1990s United Kingdom, British-based music culture movement that emphasised Britishness. Musically, Britpop produced bright, catchy alternative rock, with significant influences from British guitar pop of the 1960s and 1970s. Britpop was considered a musical reaction to the darker lyrical themes and soundscapes of the American-led grunge music of the time, and Britain's own shoegaze music scene. Deceptive Records was a British independent record label formed in 1993 by Steve Lamacq, Tony Smith and Alan James, which concentrated on rock and alternative rock. The most famous group signed to the label were Elastica. Steve Lamacq left the company after the release of Elastica's first album to avoid accusations of partiality on the Evening Session, his BBC Radio 1 show. Steve Lamacq
Stephen Paul Lamacq (born 16 October 1964), sometimes known by his nickname Lammo (given to him by John Peel), is an English disc jockey, currently working with BBC Radio 6 Music. Lamacq was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2025 New Year Honours for services to broadcasting and to music venues. Early life Lamacq was born in Bournemouth, and first lived in Ferndown. He and his family later moved to the Essex village of Colne Engaine and attended The Ramsey Academy from 1976, which had been formed the previous year from two grammar schools.
