Edna Stillwell
Edna Stillwell (May 25, 1915 - November 15, 1982) was a comedy and screenwriter best known for her work with Red Skelton. Early life Edna Marie Stillwell was born in Missouri to parents George Vincent Stillwell and Dollie Belle Tarwater. She had three older siblings: Ethel, Orville, and Frances. At the age of 14, she was working as an usherette at Loew's in Kansas City, where she met comedian Richard "Red" Skelton. Shortly after, she met him again at a dance marathons also known as a walkathon, where she had been a cashier and Skelton was the master of ceremony. Stillwell married Skelton on June 1, 1932 in Kansas City, Missouri, when she was 16 years old and he was 19 years old. Career After the wedding, Stillwell assumed the role of business manager for Skelton after haggling with the manager of the walkathon in St. Louis who wanted to cut the entertainer's salary, leading Stillwell to approach the man and successfully demand more money. Clyde Julian "Red" Foley (June 17, 1910 – September 19, 1968) was an American musician who made a major contribution to the growth of country music after World War II. For more than two decades, Foley was one of the biggest stars of the genre, selling more than 25 million records. His 1951 hit, "Peace in the Valley", was among the first million-selling gospel music, gospel records. A Grand Ole Opry veteran until his death, Foley also hosted the first popular country music series on network television, ''Ozark Jubilee'', from 1955 to 1960. ''The Red Skelton Show'' is an American television comedy/variety show that aired from 1951 to 1971. In the decade prior to hosting the show, Richard "Red" Skelton had a successful career as a radio and motion pictures star. Although his television series is largely associated with CBS, where it appeared for more than sixteen years, it actually began and ended on NBC. During its run, the program received three Emmy Awards, for Skelton as best comedian and the program as best comedy show during its initial season, and an award for comedy writing in 1961. In 1959 Skelton also received a Golden Globe for Best TV Show. ''The Raleigh Cigarette Program'' (alternatively known as ''The Raleigh Cigarette Program Starring Red Skelton'') was an American old-time radio comedy program that starred comedian Red Skelton. Skelton was, at the time, an up-and-coming comedian who made it big with an appearance on '' The Fleischmann's Yeast Hour'' (a.k.a. ''The Rudy Vallée Show''), in 1937 and for hosting '' Avalon Time'' on NBC for several months after the departure of country singer Red Foley in 1939. Other principal performers on the program included actors Ozzie and Harriet Nelson and comedian Wonderful Smith. ''Avalon Time'' is an American old-time radio comedy/ variety program that ran from 1938 to 1940 on NBC's Red Network. The program was named after its sponsor, Avalon cigarettes. Over the course of its run, ''Avalon Time'' was also sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh Pipe Tobacco and the Bulova Watch Company. The Loew's State Theatre was a movie theater at 1540 Broadway on Times Square in New York City. Designed by Thomas Lamb in the Adam style, it opened on August 29, 1921, as part of a 16-story office building for the Loew's Theatres company, with a seating capacity of 3,200 and featuring both vaudeville and films. It was the first theater on Broadway to cost $1 million. It was initially managed by Joseph Vogel, who later became president of Loew's Inc. and then MGM.
