East Aleppo Offensive (February–March 2017)
The East Aleppo offensive (2017), also referred to as the Dayr Hafir offensive, was an operation launched by the Syrian Army to prevent Turkish-backed rebel forces from advancing deeper into Syria, and also to ultimately capture the ISIL stronghold of Dayr Hafir. Another aim of the operation was to gain control of the water source for Aleppo city, at the Khafsa Water Treatment Plant, in addition to capturing the Jirah Military Airbase. At the same time, the Turkish-backed rebel groups turned towards the east and started launching attacks against the Syrian Democratic Forces, west of Manbij. Jirah Military Airbase
Jirah Air Base (sometimes spelled al-Jarrah) is a small airbase of the Syrian Arab Air Force. After surrounding the airbase in the middle of January 2013, the base was captured by opposition fighters from Ahrar al-Sham and the Free Syrian Army on 12 February. It fell under ISIL control in January 2014. On 9 March 2017 the Syrian Army launched an assault to recapture the airbase. On 12 May 2017, the SAA recaptured the airbase from ISIS in the Maskanah Plains offensive and had it fully secured by 29 May. It was reopened in January 2023. Lieutenant-General Zekai Aksakallı (born 25 December 1961) is a Turkish Special Forces Command (Turkey), Special Forces Command commander. He graduated from the Turkish Military Academy. The Manbij Revolutionaries Battalion (, , ), also simply known as Manbij Revolutionaries (), is a Syrian militia that is part of the Syrian Democratic Forces' Manbij Military Council and operates in the Aleppo Governorate. Adnan Abdul Aziz Ahmed (1977 – 29 August 2017), better known as Adnan Abu Amjad (), was the commander of the Manbij Military Council, active within the Syrian Democratic Forces in the Syrian Civil War. Ahrar Al-Sham
Harakat Ahrar al-Sham al-Islamiyya (), commonly referred to as Ahrar al-Sham, was a coalition of multiple Sunni Islamist units that coalesced into a single brigade and later a division in order to fight against the Syrian Government led by Bashar al-Assad during the Syrian Civil War.
