Earnest Money Deposit
An earnest payment or earnest money is a specific form of security deposit made in some major transactions such as real estate dealings or required by some official procurement processes to demonstrate that the applicant is serious and willing to demonstrate good faith (law), an earnest of good faith about wanting to complete the transaction. In the Middle Ages, the earnest payment was called variously an earnest penny, Arles penny, or God's silver (in Latin Argentum Dei). It was either money or a valuable coin or Exonumia, token given to bind a Financial transaction, bargain, notably for the purchase or hiring of a servant. According to Black's Law Dictionary (sixth ed.), ''Et cepit de praedicto Henrico tres denarios de Argento Dei prae manibus'' ("And he took it from the aforesaid Henry [sealed by a] Threepence (British coin)#Early threepences, silver three pence [piece] handed over [in the sight of] God"). A potential buyer of property of high value such as residential real e ...

ReadyBoost
ReadyBoost (codenamed EMD) is a disk caching software component developed by Microsoft for Windows Vista and included in later versions of Windows. ReadyBoost enables NAND memory mass storage CompactFlash, SD card, and USB flash drive devices to be used as a cache between the hard drive and random access memory in an effort to increase computing performance. ReadyBoost relies on the SuperFetch and also adjusts its cache based on user activity. ReadyDrive for hybrid drives is implemented in a manner similar to ReadyBoost. Overview Using ReadyBoost-capable flash memory ( NAND memory devices) for caching allows Windows Vista and later to service random disk reads with better performance than without the cache. This caching applies to all disk content, not just the page file or system DLLs. USB flash devices typically are faster than mechanical hard disks for random access, and slower than mechanical hard disks for sequential access. Gaining the benefit of caching implies that ...

Earth Mover's Distance
In computer science, the earth mover's distance (EMD) is a measure of dissimilarity between two frequency distributions, densities, or measures, over a metric space ''D''. Informally, if the distributions are interpreted as two different ways of piling up earth (dirt) over ''D'', the EMD captures the minimum cost of building the smaller pile using dirt taken from the larger, where cost is defined as the amount of dirt moved multiplied by the distance over which it is moved. Over probability distributions, the earth mover's distance is also known as the Wasserstein metric W_1, Kantorovich– Rubinstein metric, or Mallows's distance. It is the solution of the optimal transport problem, which in turn is also known as the Monge- Kantorovich problem, or sometimes the Hitchcock– Koopmans transportation problem; when the measures are uniform over a set of discrete elements, the same optimization problem is known as minimum weight bipartite matching. Formal definitions The EMD ...

Electro-Motive Diesel
Electro-Motive Diesel (abbreviated EMD) is a brand of diesel-electric locomotives, locomotive products and diesel engines for the rail industry. Formerly a division of General Motors, EMD has been owned by Progress Rail since 2010. Electro-Motive Diesel traces its roots to the Electro-Motive Engineering Corporation, founded in 1922 and purchased by General Motors in 1930. After purchase by GM, the company was known as GM's Electro-Motive Division. In 2005, GM sold EMD to Greenbriar Equity Group and Berkshire Partners, and in 2010, EMD was sold to Progress Rail, a subsidiary of the heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar Inc., Caterpillar. Upon the 2005 sale, the company was renamed to Electro-Motive Diesel. EMD's headquarters and engineering facilities are based in McCook, Illinois, while its final locomotive assembly line is located in Muncie, Indiana. EMD also operates a traction motor maintenance, rebuild, and overhaul facility in San Luis Potosí City, San Luis Potosí, Mexico ...

East Midlands Parkway Railway Station
East Midlands Parkway railway station is located north of Ratcliffe-on-Soar on the Midland Main Line in the East Midlands of England. It provides park and ride facilities for rail passengers on the routes from to and . It is also the closest station to East Midlands Airport, some away, but without public transport link. The station lies in south-west Nottinghamshire, close to the boundaries with Leicestershire and Derbyshire, between the stations at , and . When it opened, there was a little-used shuttle bus from the station to the airport, but this ceased not long afterwards. An hourly minibus service was re-introduced in 2015 but later withdrawn. The main station building and the 850-vehicle car park are to the west of the line, opposite Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station. Road access is via the A453, which provides a link to the nearby M1 motorway. Description East Midlands Parkway is located near the village of Ratcliffe-on-Soar in Nottinghamshire, close to the Riv ...

Equilibrium Mode Distribution
The equilibrium mode owerdistribution of light travelling in an optical waveguide or fiber, is the distribution of light that is no longer changing with fibre length or with input modal excitation. This phenomenon requires both mode filtering and mode mixing to occur in the fibre to produce a state that is independent of the mode power distribution launched by the light source. At propagation distances exceeding the equilibrium length, intramodal pulse distortion increases (bandwidth decreases) as the square root of length. The term ''equilibrium length'' is sometimes used to describe a ''stationary'' mode distribution, which is the length of multi-mode optical fiber necessary to attain a static mode distribution from a specific excitation condition. Equilibrium length is, strictly, the longest such length, as would result from a widely variable range of input excitation. Other terms for equilibrium length are ''equilibrium coupling length'' and ''equilibrium mode distribut ...

Electromagnetic Diaphragm
An electromagnetic diaphragm is a form of capacitive sensor used on an electronic stethoscope. The diaphragm is coated with a conductive material. A conductive plate is positioned behind and parallel to the diaphragm, so that the two conductive elements form a capacitor. Capacitance is a function of plate area, dielectric properties of the space between the conductors, and the distance between the conductors. It is this latter parameter which is modulated by vibration such that the capacitance varies with the distance between the electromagnetic diaphragm and the plate, forming an acoustic sensor. The electromagnetic diaphragm is a form of capacitive sensor, and shares properties with condenser microphones. The difference between the electromagnetic diaphragm and a condenser microphone is that a condenser microphone operates on the basis of air transmission, has a very thin membrane instead of a diaphragm, and cannot be placed against a body to sense sounds within the body. T ...
