Dudley Hippodrome
The Dudley Hippodrome is a theatre in the town of Dudley, West Midlands, England. The Hippodrome was built in 1938 on the site of the Dudley Opera House, which was destroyed by fire in 1936, and remained open as a variety theatre until 1964. It was subsequently operated as a bingo hall by Gala Bingo, closing in 2009. Since 2009 it has been owned by Dudley Council, with plans to demolish the site to make way for redevelopment, though local campaigners who protested these proposals, favouring a return to theatre use, finally lost their battle in December 2022. Dudley
Dudley is a large market town and administrative centre in the county of West Midlands, England, southeast of Wolverhampton and northwest of Birmingham. Historically an exclave of Worcestershire, the town is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley; in 2011 it had a population of 79,379. The Metropolitan Borough, which includes the towns of Stourbridge and Halesowen, had a population of 312,900. In 2014 the borough council named Dudley as the capital of the Black Country. Archibald Hurley Robinson (14 June 1883''1939 England and Wales Register'' – 24 February 1953)''England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966, 1973-1995'' was a prolific English architect of cinemas prior to the Second World War. Biography Robinson was born in Handsworth, Staffordshire. After serving in the Royal Air Force in the First World War, he set up his own practice which was initially called ''Hurley Robinson & Sons'' and then renamed ''Hurley Robinson & Partners'', which were both based in Birmingham, England. His work on cinemas was mainly during the 1930s. His cinemas were mainly of the Art Deco style that was popularly used by Oscar Deutsch for his Odeon Cinemas. The Metropolitan Borough of Dudley is a metropolitan borough of West Midlands, England. It was created in 1974 following the Local Government Act 1972, through a merger of the existing Dudley County Borough with the municipal boroughs of Stourbridge and Halesowen. Dudley Joel
Dudley Jack Barnato Joel (26 April 1904 – 28 May 1941) was a British businessman and Conservative Party politician. Part of the wealthy and prominent Joel family, he was the son of businessman Solomon Barnato Joel and his wife Ellen (Nellie) Ridle; he was married to Esme Oldham. Heavily involved in Thoroughbred horse racing, in 1922, his father purchased Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket from the estate of Sir Ernest Cassel. On his father's death in 1931, Dudley Joel inherited the property. In the 1931 general election, Dudley Joel was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Dudley. He was re-elected to Parliament in 1935, but with the outbreak of World War II joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and was killed in action on 28 May 1941 when the steam merchant HMS ''Registan'' was bombed by German aircraft off Cape Cornwall.
