Drogheda United F.C.
Drogheda United Football Club ( ga, Cumann Peile Dhroichead Átha Aontaithe) is a semi-professional Irish association football club based in Drogheda, County Louth playing in the League of Ireland Premier Division. They play their home matches at Head In The Game Park. The current club is the amalgamation of two former clubs in the town: Drogheda United, a non-league club founded in 1919; and Drogheda F.C., founded in 1962. The clubs merged their operations to form the current club in 1975 and have achieved success since 2005 by winning two Setanta Sports Cups, an FAI Cup, a League Cup, and their first league title, the 2007 League of Ireland Premier Division. Since 2021, the club has competed in the League of Ireland Premier Division, having been automatically promoted as winners of the 2020 League of Ireland First Division. United Park
Head In The Game Park, also known as United Park, and formerly O2 Park and Hunky Dorys Park for sponsorship purposes, is a football stadium in Drogheda, Ireland. The ground has been home to League of Ireland side Drogheda United since 1979. It was officially opened on 12 August 1979 with a friendly against Queens Park Rangers F.C. In October 1993, the first match under floodlights took place with a 2-1 win over Shamrock Rovers The ground has a capacity of 3,500 with 1,500 seats. During the middle of 2010, renovations took place to bring the venue up to licensing standards: changes include the addition of seats to the GAA side of the ground (to bring the seating capacity up to 1,500), new toilet facilities and a new covered section dedicated to wheelchair users. Cathal Muckian
Cathal Muckian (born 30 November 1951 in Dundalk), a native of Dundalk, County Louth; had a career in League of Ireland football during the 1970s and early 80s. Muckian played for five clubs, notably Drogheda United and Dundalk FC. In 1978, he was called into the Republic of Ireland national team by John Giles for an international friendly against Poland and won his first and only full international cap. In 1980/81 season he played for Shamrock Rovers F.C. and Shelbourne F.C. The following season, he turned out for Athlone Town F.C. 2007 Setanta Sports Cup
The 2007 Setanta Sports Cup was the 3rd staging of the Setanta Sports Cup, a cross-border cup competition that took place between football clubs from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The final was played at Windsor Park in Belfast, Northern Ireland on 12 May 2007, and was won by Drogheda United with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Linfield when the scores were level at 1–1 after extra time. Drogheda won the trophy for the second successive year. Shelbourne's withdrawal The draw for the 2007 Setanta Cup competition was made on 7 December 2006 with the original competing teams being the identical ones to the previous year's competition. On 30 January 2007, however, Shelbourne announced that they were withdrawing from the competition for reasons relating to their financial troubles and the fact that they would be unlikely to field a team of players.
