Dresden United F.C.
Dresden United Football Club was a football club based in the Dresden area of Stoke-on-Trent who were active at the end of the nineteenth century. History In 1892, the club were elected to the Combination, where they spent three seasons finishing seventh, fifth and fourth respectively. In 1895, they left the Combination and took up a place in the Midland League. In their two seasons in the Midland League, the club managed finishes in eleventh and tenth place (out of fifteen). In 1897, Dresden returned to the Combination but were unable to complete the season, with their record being expunged. Several players from Dresden joined the local Football League clubs, Port Vale or Stoke, including Jack Farrell who left Dresden to join Stoke in 1894. He later played for Southampton, appearing in the 1900 FA Cup Final. The Combination
The Combination was a league during the early days of English football. It had two incarnations; the first ran only for the 1888–89 season for teams across the Northern England and the Midlands, and was wound up before completion. The second was created for the 1890–91 season, but disbanded in 1911. The league comprised teams primarily from North West England and later Wales. The league should not be confused with the other former Football Combination, a competition for reserve teams from the South of England, or with the Lancashire Combination, another minor league running around the same time. First incarnation The first Combination was set up in 1888, the same year the Football League was founded. The 1902 FA Cup Final was an association football match between Sheffield United and Southampton on Saturday, 19 April 1902 at the Crystal Palace stadium in south London. It was the final match of the 1901–02 FA Cup, the 31st edition of the world's oldest football knockout competition, and England's primary cup competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup, better known as the FA Cup. Sheffield United were appearing in their third final and Southampton in their second – Sheffield United won the cup in 1899 and were runners-up in 1901; Southampton were runners-up in 1900. Joe Turner (footballer, Born 1872)
Joseph Turner (March 1872 – 20 November 1950) was a professional footballer who played in the 1902 FA Cup final for Southampton. Southampton were a Southern League club at the time, and their feat was all the more remarkable in that they had already been losing finalists two years earlier. Turner missed the 1900 final and had also previously missed a crucial penalty when Southampton lost a semi final to Nottingham Forest in 1898. Jack Farrell (footballer, Born 1873)
John Farrell (1873 – 22 February 1947) was an English professional footballer who played as a forward. Farrell played in the Football League for Stoke and New Brighton Tower and played a major part in Southern League club Southampton's major cup runs at the turn of the 20th century. Football career Early career Farrell was born in Tunstall, Staffordshire and started his football career at Dresden United before joining Stoke in October 1894 for a fee of £40. In his first season in the Football League, he made 16 league appearances, scoring six goals as Stoke finished the season in 14th place and had to play-off against Newton Heath to retain their First Division status.
