Dr. Luis María Argaña International Airport is an airport that serves the small city of Mariscal Estigarribia, in the Boquerón Department of Paraguay. The airport is named after Luis María Argaña, a vice president who was assassinated in 1999. It is operated by Paraguayan military authorities. GlobalSecurity.org states that some believe the United States are using the airport as a permanent military base. However, they go on to say that this is false. With 3,500 m (11,483 ft), its runway is the longest in the country, more than Asunción's airport. Mariscal Estigarribia () is a town in the Boquerón Department, Paraguay. Strategic importance Mariscal Estigarribia is home to Dr. Luis Maria Argaña International Airport (IATA code: ESG), which some media reports claim is a US military base set up to provide access to the strategic Triple Frontera region. 400 US troops arrived in Paraguay in July 2005, shortly after the Paraguayan Senate granted US troops diplomatic immunity. Hundreds of US military personnel are rotated though Paraguay each year, though the military has stated that the total number in the country will not exceed 10–20 at any time. Luis María Argaña
Luis María del Corazón de Jesús Dionisio Argaña Ferraro (October 3, 1932 – March 23, 1999) was a prominent Paraguayan politician and Supreme Court judge. He was an influential member of the Colorado Party and rose to the Vice-Presidency in 1998, but was assassinated in March 1999 at a time when it appeared likely that he would inherit the presidency from Raúl Cubas, who was on the verge of being impeached. The incident and its aftermath is known in Paraguay as '' Marzo paraguayo'' ("the Paraguayan March"). An airport in Paraguay, Dr. Luis María Argaña International Airport, is named for him. Silvio Pettirossi International Airport is an international airport in Luque, Paraguay, which serves Paraguay's capital city, Asunción, and indirectly serves the nearby city of Clorinda, Formosa in Argentina.
