Dore, South Yorkshire
Dore is a large village in South Yorkshire, England. The village lies on a hill above the River Sheaf which gave Sheffield its name and, until 1934, was part of Derbyshire but it is now a suburb of the city. Dore and Totley was the only ward of the city which regularly elected a Conservative councillor; however, as of May 2016, all three councillors were Liberal Democrats. The Member of Parliament for the Sheffield Hallam constituency, of which Dore is part, is Olivia Blake ( Labour) who was elected in 2019. History The name ''Dore'' is most likely to derive from one of two possible origins. It could be the same Old English root as ''door'', signifying a 'gateway' or pass between two kingdoms. Alternatively, it could be associated with the Cymric (Welsh) 'dwr' (dur) for water, as is also found in Dour in Fife, Aberdeen and Kent, Dorchester in Dorset, Durra in Cornwall, and Doro in Ireland. David Dore
David Dore (August 9, 1940 – April 8, 2016) was a Canadian figure skating competitor and official. He won the 1964 Canadian national title in four skating. He later served as Skate Canada's president and director general and as vice-president of the International Skating Union. Personal life Dore was born on August 9, 1940 in East York, Toronto. He nearly died from polio at the age of 12 and had to regain his ability to walk. He and his wife had two children, Paul and Chris. He died in Ottawa on April 8, 2016. Career Having started skating as therapy after a bout of polio, Dore was coached first by Wallace Diestelmeyer and then by Sheldon Galbraith. In 1964, he became a Canadian national champion in four skating with Bonnie Anderson, Laura Maybee, and Greg Folk. After retiring from competition, he became a judge and served at seven World Figure Skating Championships and the 1984 Winter Olympics. André Doré
André Doré (born February 11, 1958) is a retired professional ice hockey player who played 257 games in the National Hockey League. He played for the New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Quebec Nordiques. As a youth, he played in the 1971 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Pointe-Claire. He played junior hockey for the Hull Olympiques, Trois-Rivières Draveurs, and the Quebec Remparts from 1975 to 1978. The New York Rangers chose him 60th overall in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft. Doré spent four and a half years with the Rangers, always splitting the seasons between the NHL team and the minor pros. In 1983 he was traded to the Blues for Vaclav Nedomansky and Glen Hanlon. Valerie Dore
Monica Stucchi (born 28 May 1963), known by her stage name Valerie Dore, is an Italian singer. Career Monica Stucchi was born in Milan, Italy. Prior to her career in music, she worked as graphic designer. In the early 1980s she fronted The Watermelon String Band, a bluegrass band led by the banjoist Bruno Guaitamacchi that performed in the Milan clubs circuit. Stucchi was discovered at age 20 by the Italo producer Roberto Gasparini, who launched her solo career and give her the stage name Valerie Dore to improve her international appeal. Tom Dore is a retired American basketball player and former Comcast SportsNet play-by-play announcer for the National Basketball Association's Chicago Bulls. A native of Northlake, Illinois, the 7'2" (218 cm) Dore played basketball at East Leyden High School in Franklin Park, Illinois, where he was an All-America honoree during the mid-1970s. Dore then played at the University of Missouri, where he appeared in two NCAA Tournaments and became the school's all-time leader in tournament blocked shots. Richard Dore
Richard Dore (1749–1800) was an attorney, deputy judge advocate and secretary to the governor of the Colony of New South Wales, Australia in the late 18th century. He was the second person to hold office as deputy judge advocate, a position akin to the position of chief justice in the colony, and the first legally qualified person to do so. Author Robert Hughes described Dore as a "blundering and cantankerous incompetent, much given to petty graft". In reality, he was probably no worse than other deputy judge advocates who served before or after him. Julie Dore is a British Labour Party politician, who was Leader of Sheffield City Council from May 2011 until January 2021, on which she represents Arbourthorne. John Clark Dore
John Clark Dore (March 22, 1822 – December 14, 1900) was an American educator and politician from New Hampshire. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Dore briefly taught in Boston, Massachusetts before he was recruited to come to Chicago, Illinois to serve as its first superintendent of school. Dore was also a successful merchant, serving as the vice president of the Chicago Board of Trade. He was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1868, where he helped to establish the Illinois Humane Society.
