Donald Alexander (filmmaker)
Donald Alexander (1913–1993) was a British documentary film-maker who worked as producer, director, writer and editor of films documenting social and industrial conditions, most notably in the coal-mining industry, between the 1930s and 1970s. The movement of which he was part is now regarded as the golden age of British documentary. Its leading figures also included Paul Rotha, John Grierson, Edgar Anstey, Humphrey Jennings, Basil Wright and Arthur Elton. Biography Alexander’s family came from Wick, in north-east Scotland, though he was educated in England, first at Shrewsbury School and then Cambridge University. In 1939 he married Slade-trained artist and illustrator Isabel Alexander and then, after their divorce in 1945, fellow film-maker Budge Cooper, with whom he collaborated over many years. Donald Crichton Alexander (May 22, 1921 – February 2, 2009) was a tax lawyer and Nixon administration official. Alexander was appointed Commissioner of Internal Revenue by President Richard Nixon in May 1973, and was replaced in February 1977, early in the Jimmy Carter administration. Alexander resisted attempts by Nixon to use the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to investigate Nixon's political enemies, resulting in a string of attempts by Nixon to fire him. Early on in his tenure as Commissioner, he dismantled the IRS Special Service Staff, which had been used to pursue detractors of the administration and its policies in Vietnam. Alexander served in the Army in World War II, receiving the Bronze Star and the Silver Star. Donald Alexander (1928 – 9 May 2007) was a Scottish physician and researcher and a major figure in international thyroid research. He studied at the University of Glasgow and graduated in 1951 being awarded the Cullen medal. He studied under Edward Wayne, professor of medicine at the University of Glasgow and he developed an academic interest in thyroid disease. He then moved to the US to continue his research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland Bethesda () is an unincorporated, census-designated place in southern Montgomery County, Maryland.
