Don Wilson (musician)
Don Lee Wilson (10 February 1933 - 22 January 2022) was an American guitarist who was a founding member of the instrumental surf-rock group the Ventures. In 2008, Wilson and other members of the band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Performer category. Wilson was the last surviving member of the classic line-up of the Ventures following the death of Nokie Edwards in 2018, before Wilson's own death in January 2022. Early life Wilson was born in Tacoma, Washington and was a middle child. The family heritage is mixed, his mother, Josie, was first-generation Swedish, while his father was of Welsh and Irish descent. His mother would show him how to play chords on the tipple when he was around 12 years old. Career In 1958, Wilson and Bob Bogle met Nokie Edwards and invited him as a member of the group. The Ventures
The Ventures are an American instrumental rock band formed in Tacoma, Washington, in 1958, by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle. The band, which was a quartet for most of its existence, helped to popularize the electric guitar across the world during the 1960s. While their popularity in the United States waned in the 1970s, the group remains especially Big in Japan (phrase), revered in Japan, where they toured regularly. The classic lineup of the band consisted of Wilson (rhythm guitar), Bogle (initially lead guitar, later bass), Nokie Edwards (initially bass, later lead guitar), and Mel Taylor (drums). Their first wide-release single, "Walk, Don't Run (instrumental), Walk, Don't Run" (1960), brought international fame to the group, and is often cited as one of the top songs ever recorded for guitar. "Start the Commotion" is a song by British electronic music duo The Wiseguys, from their second album ''The Antidote''. It was released as a single in the UK in 1998, and peaked at #66 on the UK Singles Chart. A re-release the following year gave the song a higher chart placing, peaking at #47. It also peaked at #36 on the American dance charts in 2000. "Start the Commotion" has also been officially remixed by Eric Kupper and DJ Spinna. Edward Lodewijk Van Halen ( , ; January 26, 1955 – October 6, 2020) was an American musician and songwriter. He was the guitarist, keyboardist, backing vocalist, and primary songwriter of the rock band Van Halen, which he co-founded alongside his brother Alex Van Halen in 1972. "Pipeline" is a surf rock instrumental by The Chantays (credited as "Chantay's"), which was recorded in July 1962. History The tune, originally called "Liberty's Whip" after ''The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance'', was renamed after the band members saw a surfing movie showing scenes of the Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. The record, fitting in with the popular surfing craze of the time, swiftly rose up the Billboard Pop charts, reaching #4 and becoming a classic 1960s hit. The tune featured Alberti bass arpeggios. Although they had myriad surf tunes, "Pipeline" was The Chantays' only hit single, and is considered one of the landmarks of the surf genre. "Wipe Out" is a surf rock instrumental composed by Bob Berryhill, Pat Connolly, Jim Fuller and Ron Wilson. Composed in the form of twelve-bar blues, the tune was first performed and recorded by the Surfaris, who became famous with the single in 1963. The single was first issued on the independent labels DFS (#11/12) in January 1963 and Princess (#50) in February and finally picked up for national distribution on Dot as 45-16479 in April. Dot reissued the single in April 1965 as 45-144. The song—both the Surfaris' version as well as cover versions—has been featured in over 20 films and television series since 1964, appearing at least once a decade. A " wipe out" is a fall from a surfboard, especially one that looks painful. "Hawaii Five-O Theme" is an instrumental composed by Morton Stevens as the theme music for the CBS television series '' Hawaii Five-O'', which aired from 1968 to 1980.
