Djúpavík
Djúpavík () is a small village in the North-West of Iceland. It is located at the head of Reykjarfjörður on the Strandir coast in the Westfjords region (Vestfirðir), in the municipality of Árneshreppur. It is approximately 70 km away from Hólmavík (the nearest settlement of any account), 280 km from Ísafjörður and 340 km from the country's capital Reykjavík. At present it only consists of seven houses, a hotel and the ruins of a herring factory. It can be reached by car via road 643 or by plane via the nearby Gjögur Airport. History of settlement Before 1917 Prior to 1917, the area around Djúpavík hosted farmsteads for hundreds of years. Around 1916 only one family lived there. 1917-1934 The village of Djúpavík was first settled in 1917 when Elías Stefánsson built a herring salting factory there. Suðurland (ship)
M. ''Davidsen'' was the name of a passenger ship in Iceland which began operations in 1891. It was assessed at 217 gross register tonnage and measured 35.25 m (115.6 ft) long by 6.21 m (20.4 ft) wide by 4.86 m (16.0 ft) deep. It had room for 14 passengers. The ship was purchased from Denmark for 225,000 Icelandic króna in 1919 and used to move people and goods between Reykjavík and locations in Faxa Bay and Breiðafjörður. After its purchase it was renamed to ''Suðurland'' in 1919. Strandir
Strandir () is the eastern coastal region of Iceland's Westfjords. It encompasses 3,500 square kilometers and is considered remote and difficult to access. It has a population of around 800 people, with the largest community being Hólmavík. Historically it has relied on fishing and sheep farming to support its economies. The herring stocks of the region, once some of the best in the country, collapsed in the 1950s. More recently, though late relative to the broader region, it has sought tourism industries. Heima
''Heima'' (; ''at home'') is a documentary film and double DVD set about the tour around Iceland in the summer of 2006 of the band Sigur Rós. During the tour the band played two big open-air concerts at Miklatún - Reykjavík (30 July) and Ásbyrgi (4 August), as well as small scale concerts at Ólafsvík (24 July), Ísafjörður (26 July), Djúpavík (27 July), Háls, Öxnadalur (28 July) and Seyðisfjörður (3 August). In addition, a protest concert against the Kárahnjúkar dam was performed at Snæfellsskála (3 August). The documentary also includes footage of an acoustic concert played for family and friends at Gamla Borg, a coffee shop in the small town Borg, on 22 April 2007. María Guðmundsdóttir (born 12 February 1942) is an Icelandic filmmaker, photographer and model. She is a former supermodel and Miss Iceland in 1961. Sigur Rós
Sigur Rós () is an Icelandic post-rock band from Reykjavík, active since 1994. The band comprises singer and guitarist Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson, bassist Georg Hólm, and keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson. Known for their ethereal sound, frontman Jónsi's falsetto vocals, and their use of bowed guitar, Sigur Rós incorporate classical and minimal aesthetic elements. The krona (; plural: ''kronor''; sign: kr; code: SEK) is the official currency of the Kingdom of Sweden.
