Djurgårdens IF Fäktförening
Djurgårdens IF Fäktförening is the fencing section of Swedish sports club Djurgårdens IF. Djurgårdens IF Fäktförening is a sovereign club within the alliance club Djurgårdens IF. The fencing section was founded in 1958 and became its own club in 1990. The fencing club was founded by Herbert Wahlberg in 1958, who built it up together with Béla Rerrich. Rerrich was a Hungarian fencing champion who defected from Hungary in 1956 due to the Hungarian uprising that year which was put down by the Soviet Union. Rerrich was the fence master of Djurgårdens IF from the start until his death in 2005. Under his leadership, members of Djurgårdens IF have won Olympic and World Championship medals as well as numerous Swedish championships in both fencing and modern pentathlon. The club is striving to continue his work. Carl Von Essen
Carl von Essen (18 October 1940 – 11 November 2021) was a Swedish fencer and Olympic champion. He competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, where he won a gold medal in épée with the Swedish team. Foil (fencing)
A foil is one of the three weapons used in the sport of fencing, all of which are metal. It is flexible, rectangular in cross section, and weighs under a pound. As with the épée, points are only scored by contact with the tip, which, in electrically scored tournaments, is capped with a spring-loaded button to signal a touch. A foil fencer's uniform features the lamé (a vest, electrically wired to record valid hits). 1984 Summer Olympics
The 1984 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXIII Olympiad and also known as Los Angeles 1984) were an international multi-sport event held from July 28 to August 12, 1984, in Los Angeles, California, United States. It marked the second time that Los Angeles had hosted the Games, the first being in 1932. California was the home state of the incumbent U.S. President Ronald Reagan, who officially opened the Games. These were the first Summer Olympic Games under the IOC presidency of Juan Antonio Samaranch. Rolf Edling
Rolf Erik Sören Edling (born 30 November 1943) is a retired Swedish épée fencer. He competed at the 1968, 1972, 1976 and 1980 Olympics and won a team gold medal in 1976. His best individual result was fourth place in 1980. Edling was born in India, where his father was worked for the ASEA company. He then moved to Sweden and started fencing at a boarding school in Sigtuna. Between 1969 and 1978 he won ten medals at the world championships, including five gold medals. Hans Jacobson
Hans Jacobson (March 17, 1947 – July 9, 1984) was a Swedish modern pentathlete, fencer and Olympic Champion. He competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, where he won a gold medal in épée with the Swedish team. He originally won a bronze medal in the modern pentathlon team competition at the 1968 Summer Olympics along with Björn Ferm and Hans-Gunnar Liljenvall. However, he was stripped of the medal after Liljenvall failed a drug test (for alcohol). Fencing
Fencing is a group of three related combat sports. The three disciplines in modern fencing are the foil, the épée, and the sabre (also ''saber''); winning points are made through the weapon's contact with an opponent. A fourth discipline, singlestick, appeared in the 1904 Olympics but was dropped after that and is not a part of modern fencing. Fencing was one of the first sports to be played in the Olympics. Based on the traditional skills of swordsmanship, the modern sport arose at the end of the 19th century, with the Italian school having modified the historical European martial art of classical fencing, and the French school later refining the Italian system. Épée
The ( or , ), sometimes spelled epee in English, is the largest and heaviest of the three weapons used in the sport of fencing. The modern derives from the 19th-century , a weapon which itself derives from the French small sword. This contains a detailed contempraneous description of the history and form of the sport. As a thrusting weapon, the is similar to a foil (contrasted with a sabre, which is designed for slashing). It has a stiffer blade than a foil. It is triangular in cross-section with a V-shaped groove called a fuller. The also has a larger bell guard designed to protect the users arm when fencing.
