District Council Of Sedan
The District Council of Sedan (formerly District Council of Keyneton and Swan Reach) was a local government area in South Australia seated at the town of Sedan from 1933 until 1976. From the late 1920, the number of local councils in the state was drastically reduced and many councils were amalgamated in accordance with the Local Government Areas (Re-arrangement) Acts 1929 and 1931. The District Council of Keyneton and District Council of Swan Reach were two such and were officially amalgamated on 18 September 1933, although the northern parts of Swan Reach were annexed by Truro and Waikerie weeks prior to the amalgamation. The principal office of the new council was situated at Sedan while the two older council chambers at Keyneton and Swan Reach were also used by the council. Sedan, South Australia
Sedan is a rural town in South Australia. It is located about 100 kilometres east of Adelaide and about 20 kilometres west of the Murray River. It is located on the dry eastern side of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Overview Sedan used to be the terminus of the South Australian Railways' Sedan line, which opened on 13 October 1919, and was curtailed to Cambrai in 1964. Sedan is at the junction of the Stott Highway which connects the Barossa Valley on the west to the River Murray and Riverland on the east, and Halfway House Road which provides a north-south heavy vehicle route between the Sturt Highway and Princes Highway on the plains to the east of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Surrounded by dry-stone walls built by early settlers, the historic town of Sedan is home to many 19th century buildings that are in excellent condition. The District Council of Swan Reach (formerly District Council of Blanchetown) was a local government area in the Murraylands of South Australia from 1888 to 1933. History The council was established in January 1888 by promulgation of the District Councils Act 1887. It occupied the hundreds of Skurray, Fisher, Nildottie and Paisley. In 1898 the newly-gazetted hundreds of Murbko and Bakara (in the County of Albert) were added to the district. In 1920 the council name was changed to 'Swan Reach'. Towitta, South Australia
Towitta is a locality in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia at the foot of the eastern side of the Mount Lofty Ranges. It is a rural community dominated by growing cereal grain crops. Its name is taken from ''Tewitty'', the native name of a permanent spring nearby. The town was surveyed by H.C. Talbot in March 1876, and the Towitta public school was open from 1880 to 1942. The murder of Bertha Schippan in January 1902 occurred on a farm to the north of the township of Towitta. Her sister Mary was later acquitted in Adelaide of the murder, which has never been officially solved. In 1984, the ABC produced a television film titled ''The Schippan Mystery'' covering the case. The Hundred of Bagot is a cadastral hundred in the County of Eyre in South Australia. It is located between the Mount Lofty Ranges on the west and the Murray River further to the east. The Hundred of Bagot is almost exactly spans the boundaries of the contemporary town of Sedan. History The Hundred of Bagot was proclaimed in 1860 by Governor Richard Graves MacDonnell. It is named after Charles Hervey Bagot, MLC. The Hundred of Jellicoe (formerly Hundred of North Rhine) is a cadastral hundred in the County of Eyre in South Australia. It is located on the east Mount Lofty Ranges foothills. The Hundred of North Rhine was proclaimed in 1851 but the name was changed in 1918 to the current, after Admiral John Jellicoe, as part of a process to remove "names of enemy origin" at the time of World War I. The Hundred of Jellicoe includes the township and most of the locality of Truro, Towitta, Keyneton and a portion of the western edge of the locality of Sedan. The original name "North Rhine" is in reference to the North Rhine River, a tributary of the Marne River (formerly known as South Rhine). Swan Reach is a river port in South Australia 127 km north-east of Adelaide on the Murray River between Blanchetown and Mannum in South Australia. It is on the left bank of the river. The Swan Reach Ferry is a cable ferry crossing operated by the state government as part of the state's road network. Swan Reach, with all parts below Lock #1, is also one of the lowest parts of the river. It is currently (2009–2010) about 1.5 metres below its normal level. Keyneton is a locality in South Australia. The town is in the Mid Murray Council local government area, north-east of the state capital, Adelaide. At the 2011 census, Keyneton and the surrounding area had a population of 534. The town was named after English pastoralist Joseph Keynes (related to the Keynes Family), who had settled the area in 1842 and whose descendants still live and farm in the area.
