Dierbergs is a supermarket chain based in Chesterfield, Missouri, that, along with Schnucks, dominates the Greater St. Louis grocery market. The chain operates 26 stores in both Missouri and Illinois. The company now employs more than 5,000 employees, making it one of the top 25 largest employers in the St. Louis metro area.

History

The chain was founded in 1854 by William Dierberg. In 1914, William Dierberg moved to Creve Coeur to help run the general store. The store was located at the "Creve Coeur House", which had the 14 Mile House hotel and the Creve Coeur Farmer's Bank. The broader valley of Chesterfield was originally referred to as "Gumbo Flats", derived from its soil, which though very rich and silty, resembled gumbo when wet.
