It is located mostly in Alpena County south of the city of Alpena. The mouth is on Thunder Bay of Lake Huron near the small community of Ossineke in Sanborn Township. The north branch rises as the outflow of Devils Lake a few mile north-northwest of Ossineke. The south branch of the river rises in northern Alcona County near the community of Spruce in Caledonia Township and flows mostly north and east to join the north branch near Ossineke, just from the mouth. The south branch runs closely along the west side of U.S. Highway 23 for about , before the road crosses both the south and north branches near Ossineke. Alpena, Michigan
Alpena ( ') is the only city in and county seat of Alpena County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 10,483 at the 2010 census. After Traverse City, it is the second most populated city in the Northern Michigan region. The city is surrounded by Alpena Township, but the two are administered autonomously. It is the core city of the Alpena micropolitan statistical area, which encompasses all of Alpena County and had a total population of 28,360 at the 2010 census. Ossineke is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Alpena County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 938 at the 2010 census. The community is located within Sanborn Township, several miles south of Alpena on U.S. Highway 23. The name is derived from the Anishinaabe word (either the Ojibwa or the Ottawa) ''zhingaabewasiniigigaabawaad'', meaning "Where the image stones stood", though the modern Anishinaabe name for the place is ''asiniike'', meaning "to quarry". Sanborn Township is a civil township of Alpena County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,116 at the 2010 census. Communities * Ossineke is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in the township on Lake Huron at the mouth of the Devils River. The census-designated place includes an area north of the community along the Lake Huron shore and south of the community along U.S. Route 23. Devils Lake is the name of a few lakes in the U.S. state of Michigan. Lenawee County The largest Devils Lake is in Lenawee County on the boundary between Woodstock Township and Rollin Township. The community of Devils Lake is on the northern end of the lake and Manitou Beach is at the southwest end.
