Denver City Home Guard
The Denver City Home Guard was a formation of militia during the American Civil War, raised from Denver City in the Colorado territory.Dyer, (1959), p. 1,006. The unit was mustered out in April 1862. History In September and early October, 1861, Colorado Territorial Governor William Gilpin enlisted men for six month service, into the Denver City Home Guard, which consisted of two companies, designated No. 1 and No. 2. Joseph Ziegelmuller was the Captain of Company 1, and James W. Iddings was Captain of Company 2. Other officers for Company 1 were: 1st Lieutenant Jacob Garres, and 2nd Lieutenant William Wise. For Company 2: 1st Lieutenant John A. Latta, and 2nd Lieutenant Adamson T. Dayton. Though militia, these guards were regularly mustered into the United States service. The 200 men saw no action, but they served in Denver City and at Camp Weld, and were mustered out by Captain W. H. Bachus in March and April 1862. Union (American Civil War)
During the American Civil War, the Union, also known as the North, referred to the United States led by President Abraham Lincoln. It was opposed by the secessionist Confederate States of America (CSA), informally called "the Confederacy" or "the South". The Union is named after its declared goal of preserving the United States as a constitutional union. American Civil War
The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 26, 1865; also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States. Colorado Territory
The Territory of Colorado was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from February 28, 1861, until August 1, 1876, when it was admitted to the Union as the State of Colorado. The territory was organized in the wake of the Pike's Peak Gold Rush of 1858–1861, which brought the first large concentration of white settlement to the region. The organic act creating the territory was passed by Congress and signed by President James Buchanan on February 28, 1861, during the secessions by Southern states that precipitated the American Civil War. The boundaries of the Colorado Territory were identical with those of the current State of Colorado. The organization of the territory helped solidify Union control over a mineral-rich area of the Rocky Mountains. William Gilpin (governor)
William Gilpin (October 4, 1813 – January 20, 1894) was a 19th-century US explorer, politician, land speculator, and futurist writer about the American West. He served as military officer in the United States Army during several wars, accompanied John C. Frémont on his second expedition through the West, and was instrumental in the formation of the government of the Oregon Territory. As a politician and writer, he was an inveterate believer in Manifest Destiny and was a visionary booster of new settlement to the West, helping lay the groundwork in his writings for a modern theory of the succession of civilizations. Gilpin served as the first governor of the Colorado Territory. His administration was consumed largely with the defense of the new territory in the early days of the American Civil War and was brought down after only one year by scandalous financial dealings. Fort Weld
Fort Weld, also called Camp Weld, began as a military camp on 30 acres east of the Platte River in what is now the La Alma-Lincoln Park neighborhood of Denver, Colorado. It was named for Lewis Ledyard Weld, the first Territorial Secretary. The central square of the post was used to practice drills of the troops. Buildings—soldier's quarters, officers' headquarters, mess rooms, a hospital, and a guard house—surrounded the square. The main entrance to the camp was on the eastern side of the post. It was established on September 1861 and abandoned in 1865. Civil War Governor William Gilpin had it built in 1861 to protect the territory from attack by the Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. The Colorado Territory was formally created in 1861 shortly before the bombardment of Fort Sumter sparked the American Civil War. Although sentiments were somewhat divided in the early days of the war, Colorado was only marginally a pro-Union territory (four statehood attempts were thwarted, largely by Confederate sympathizers in July 1862, February 1863, February 1864, and January 1866).
