Traditionally, a delicatessen or deli is a retail establishment that sells a selection of fine, exotic, or foreign prepared foods. Delicatessen originated in Germany (original: ) during the 18th century and spread to the United States in the mid-19th century. European immigrants to the United States, especially Ashkenazi Jews, popularized the delicatessen in U.S. culture beginning in the late 19th century. More recently, many larger retail stores like supermarkets have "deli" sections. ''Delicatessen'' is a 1991 French post-apocalyptic black comedy film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, starring Dominique Pinon and Marie-Laure Dougnac. It was released in North America as "presented by Terry Gilliam." Plot In a dilapidated apartment building in post-apocalyptic France, food is in short supply and grain is used as currency. On the ground floor is a butcher's shop, run by the landlord, Clapet, who posts job opportunities in the newspaper to lure victims to the building, whom he murders and butchers as a cheap source of meat to sell to his tenants. Following the murder of the last worker, unemployed circus clown Louison applies for the vacant position. Louison proves to be a superb worker with a spectacular trick knife, and the butcher is reluctant to kill him too quickly. ''Delicatessen'' (german: Delikatessen) is a 1930 German romance film directed by Géza von Bolváry and starring Harry Liedtke, Georgia Lind, and Ernő Verebes. It was shot at the Tempelhof Studios in Berlin. The film's sets were designed by the art director Robert Neppach. Plot Franz Hellmer is the manager of Paul Wallis' delicatessen, and his friend Bela works there as a clerk. When the friends meet Lilo Martens, both are very taken with the pretty young woman. It quickly turns out, however, that Bela cannot score with Lilo, while the charming Franz thinks he has a chance. After partying with friends at the "Green Cockatoo" and cheering the performance of the singer Dolly Reves, and closing the place because of the police hour, the friends decide to continue the fun get-together in the deli. Delicatessen were an English indie-rock group formed at Leicester in the early 1990s. They released three albums and four singles before splitting in 1998.Strong, Martin C.:"The Great Alternative & Indie Discography", 1999, Canongate, They were associated with the Britpop era. Biography Delicatessen was formed by Neil Carlill (vocals, guitar), Craig Bown (guitar, flute), Pete Capewell (bass) and Stuart Dayman (drums), taking their name from the French film. Signing to Starfish records, they debuted in October 1994 with the single "Inviting Both Sisters To Dinner", followed by "C.F. Kane" in April 1995. Debut album ''Skin Touching Water'' was released a month later. They headlined the little tent at Reading that summer, with Jonny Wood added on keyboards, percussion, backing vocals, and violin from then on. Capewell had already left, replaced by Will Foster. Oomph! is a German rock band from Wolfsburg, formed in 1989. The band pioneered the Neue Deutsche Härte movement. Their work contains lyrics in both English and German, with a shift towards German exclusively on recent albums (''GlaubeLiebeTod'', ''Monster'', ''Des Wahnsinns fette Beute'', '' XXV'', and ''Ritual'' are entirely in German). History Early years (1989–2002) Oomph! incorporated many styles of music such as metal, industrial, alternative rock, electronica and gothic to create their sound. Their style changed between their self-titled debut, ''Oomph!'' (1992), and its successor '' Sperm'' (1994). Though they started with very much a dance-laden industrial sound, they quickly moved to a much more heavily guitar-driven metal sound, while still acknowledging their electronic roots.
