Delfzijl
Delfzijl (; gos, Delfsiel) is a city and former municipality with a population of 25,651 in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. Delfzijl was a sluice between the Delf and the Ems, which became fortified settlement in the 16th century. The fortifications were removed in the late 19th century. Delfzijl is the fifth largest seaport in the Netherlands, and the largest port in the North East of the country. Etymology The name ''Delfzijl'' means 'sluice of the Delf'. Barrie Delf
Barrie Delf (born 5 June 1961) is an English retired professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Southend United in The Football League, where he made only one appearance in the Third Division in the 1982–1983 season. After his spell with Southend ended in 1986, Delf went on to play non-League football for Dartford and Grays Athletic. Football career Before turning professional, Delf played amateur football for Leigh Ramblers in the Southend Borough Combination League, Leigh Marshes and Trinity whilst working as civil servant for the Department of Social Security. He had a trial with Aston Villa, but Ron Saunders decided against signing him due to Villa having recently taken on an apprentice goalkeeper. BBC Essex sports presenter Roger Buxton, recommended Delf to Southend United chief scout Bob Walls, eventually signing on non-contract terms in 1983. Marion Delf-Smith
Ellen Marion Delf-Smith FLS (née Delf, 31 January 1883 – 23 February 1980) was a British botanist. Biography Ellen Marion Delf was born to Thomas William Herbert Delf, a secretary, and Catherine Mary Delf (née Bridges) on 31 January 1883. She attended James Allen's Girls' School before studying natural sciences at Girton College, Cambridge. She studied there from 1902 to 1906, holding a Clothworkers' Scholarship, and gained first class marks in both parts of the tripos, specialising in botany. After completing her studies at Cambridge Delf took up a post at Westfield College, University of London. She was tasked with setting up the teaching of botany at the college. Despite the college having no money for equipment or technicians and a poor collection of specimens, she managed to raise funds to better equip the laboratory.
