Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative
Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative, Inc. is a non-profit rural electric utility cooperative headquartered in San Augustine, Texas. The Cooperative was organized in January 1938 and its first power lines were energized in December of that year. The Cooperative serves portions of eight counties in the state of Texas, in a territory generally surrounding San Augustine. Currently (as of July 2006) the Cooperative has approximately 7,000 miles of line and nearly 37,000 meters. A utility cooperative is a type of cooperative that is tasked with the delivery of a public utility such as electricity, water or telecommunications to its members. Profits are either reinvested for infrastructure or distributed to members in the form of "patronage" or "capital credits", which are dividends paid on a member's investment in the cooperative. Each customer is a member and owner of the business. This means that all members have equal individual authority, unlike investor-owned utilities where the extent of individual authority is governed by the number of shares held. Like cooperatives operating in other sectors, many utility cooperatives conduct their affairs according to a set of ideals based on the Rochdale Principles. San Augustine is the county seat city of San Augustine County, Texas, in East Texas, United States. The population was at the 2020 census. History The first European settlement in the area began in 1717 with the establishment of Mission Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de los Ais by Spanish missionaries. Panola County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 22,491. The county seat is Carthage. Located in East Texas and originally developed for cotton plantations, the county's name is derived from a Choctaw word for cotton.
