Daşoguz Region
Daşoguz Region ( tk, Daşoguz welaýaty, formerly Daşhowuz) is one of the regions of Turkmenistan. It is in the north of the country, bordering Uzbekistan. The area of the province is 73,430 square kilometers, and the total population is 1,370,400 (2005 est.).''Statistical Yearbook of Turkmenistan 2000-2004'', National Institute of State Statistics and Information of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, 2005. The capital is Daşoguz. The region is mostly desert, and is experiencing severe environmental degradation as a result of the Aral Sea ecological catastrophe. Increased soil salinity has ruined thousands of square kilometers of farmland. The region contains the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Köneürgenç and the archaeological site, Butentau. Regions Of Turkmenistan
Turkmenistan is divided into five regions or ''welaýatlar'' (singular '' welaýat'') and one capital city (''şäher'') with provincial legal status. They are Ahal, Balkan, Dashoguz, Lebap and Mary, plus the capital city of Ashgabat. Each province is divided into districts. Saparmyrat Türkmenbaşy District is a district of Daşoguz Province in Turkmenistan. The administrative center of the district is the town of Saparmyrat Türkmenbaşy. Ruhubelent
Ruhubelent is a town and the administrative center of Ruhubelent District of Daşoguz Province, Turkmenistan. The district was established in April 2007 and the town of Ruhubelent was founded on 17 October 2008. Etymology The word ''ruhubelent'' in Turkmen means "inspiring, inspirational". Konye-Urgench
Konye-Urgench ( tk, Köneürgenç / Көнеүргенч; fa, کهنه گرگانج, ''Kuhna Gurgānj'', literally "Old Gurgānj"), also known as Old Urgench or Urganj, is a city of about 30,000 inhabitants in north Turkmenistan, just south from its border with Uzbekistan. It is the site of the ancient town of Gurgānj, which contains the ruins of the capital of Khwarazm. Görogly (city)
Görogly, previously called Tagta, is a city subordinate to a district and the administrative center of Görogly District, Daşoguz Province, Turkmenistan. It is located 20 kilometers south of the city of Daşoguz. Etymology The name Görogly was assigned by Turkmen authorities to both the city and the district in 2002 to honor the Turkic national epos Epic of Koroghlu ( tk, Görogly). The municipalities were called Tagta during the Soviet period. The word ''tagta'' in various Turkic languages means "wood" but in Turkmen specifically means "board". Boldumsaz
Boldumsaz, formerly Kalinin and Voro’silovabad, is a city and capital of Boldumsaz District in the Daşoguz Province of Turkmenistan. Etymology Scholars hold the name of the place to mean "Fortress in a Marshy Place"; a fortress, atop a square plateau, is visible from afar. Local people argue a different etymology infusing folk-lore. The local Khan commissioned an architect to build the tallest minaret of the world at some place nearby but planned to execute him post-completion, lest he would replicate the designs elsewhere. The architect got to know of this plan, used his resources to construct wings, and flew away from the minaret. Landing at the fortress, he exclaimed the Turkmen equivalent of "Safe and Sound", which changed to the current name of the city with passage of time. Andalyp (city)
Andalyp, until 2004 called Ýylanly, and from 2004 to 2022 called Gurbansoltan Eje adyndaky, is a city and capital of Akdepe District in Daşoguz Province, Turkmenistan. Etymology On 9 November 2022 by parliamentary resolution the city was renamed in honor of the poet Nurmuhammet Andalyp. Prior to that, on 6 September 2004 by Parliamentary Resolution 227-II the city was renamed in honor of the mother of President Saparmurat Niyazov, Gurbansoltan Eje. Originally it was named Ilyaly ( Ильялы, the meaning of which is obscure) but by no later than 1992 had been renamed Ýylanly, which in Turkmen means "with snakes".
