David Scott Mitchell
David Scott Mitchell (19 March 1836 – 24 July 1907) was a collector of Australian books, founder and benefactor of the Mitchell Library, at the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney.G. D. Early life Mitchell was born in Sydney, the son of Dr James Mitchell and his wife Augusta Maria Frederick, ''née'' Scott. James Mitchell came to Australia in 1821 as an army surgeon, and two years later was appointed assistant surgeon at the military hospital, Macquarie Street, Sydney, of which he became head in 1825. James Mitchell afterwards became the owner of 50,000 acres (200 km2) in the Hunter River valley which included rich coal-bearing land. Frederick Victor Grey Wymark
Frederick Victor Grey Wymark (6 October 1872 – 19 October 1942) was an Australian Australiana collector, book collector and bookseller. Biography Wymark was born in Stawell, Victoria to a local Victorian mother and British father, he came to Sydney in 1884 and grew up in Wooloomooloo, when David Angus opened a book store in Market Street, Sydney, Wymark became his assistant and was then apprenticed by Angus in 1890, Angus subsequently with his business partner established the retailer Angus & Robertson bookstores. After David Angus died in 1900, Wymark took over the majority share of the company with George Robertson. Wymark died in Church Point, New South Wales in 1942. Ida Leeson
Ida Emily Leeson (11 February 1885 – 22 January 1964) was the Mitchell Librarian at the State Library of New South Wales from December 1932 – April 1946. She was the first woman to achieve a senior management position in an Australian library. Early years Ida Emily Leeson was born in Leichhardt, New South Wales on 11 February 1885 daughter of Thomas Leeson, a carpenter from Canada, and his Australian born wife Mary Ann, née Emberson. She was educated at Leichhardt Public School and Sydney Girls High School where she was a successful student, winning the first prize in the first class in 1900. Leeson graduated from the University of Sydney in 1906. Career Leeson began her working career briefly as a teacher, before taking up a position at the Public Library of New South Wales as a library assistant in 1906. Public Library Of New South Wales
The State Library of New South Wales, part of which is known as the Mitchell Library, is a large heritage-listed special collections, reference and research library open to the public and is one of the oldest libraries in Australia. Established in 1869 its collections date back to the Australian Subscription Library established in the colony of New South Wales (now a state of Australia) in 1826. The library is located on the corner of Macquarie Street and Shakespeare Place, in the Sydney central business district adjacent to the Domain and the Royal Botanic Gardens, in the City of Sydney. Rookwood Cemetery
Rookwood Cemetery (officially named Rookwood Necropolis) is a heritage-listed cemetery in Rookwood, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is the largest necropolis in the Southern Hemisphere and is the world's largest remaining operating cemetery from the Victorian era. It is close to Lidcombe railway station about west of the Sydney central business district. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. Description Rookwood Cemetery is divided into denominational and operational areas with individual offices, staff, and equipment to run different parts of the entire area.
