Data.gov
Data.gov is a U.S. Government website launched in late May 2009 by the Federal Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the United States, Vivek Kundra. Data.gov aims to improve public access to high value, machine-readable datasets generated by the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. The site is a repository for Federal, state, local, and tribal government information made available to the public. History and background On March 5, 2009, shortly after his appointment as the first Federal Chief Information Officer, Vivek Kundra announced the creation of Data.gov. Vivek Kundra
Vivek Kundra (born October 9, 1974) is a former United States, American administrator who served as the first chief information officer of the United States from March, 2009 to August, 2011 under President Barack Obama. He is currently the chief operating officer at Sprinklr, a provider of enterprise customer experience management software based in NYC. He was previously a visiting Fellow at Harvard University. He previously served in Mayor of the District of Columbia, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty's cabinet as the District's chief technology officer and in Governor of Virginia, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine's cabinet as Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Technology. Open data are data that are openly accessible, exploitable, editable and shareable by anyone for any purpose. Open data are generally licensed under an open license. The goals of the open data movement are similar to those of other "open(-source)" movements such as open-source software, open-source hardware, open content, open specifications, open education, open educational resources, open government, open knowledge, open access (publishing), open access, open science, and the open web. The growth of the open data movement is paralleled by a rise in intellectual property rights. James Hendler
James Alexander Hendler (born April 2, 1957) is an artificial intelligence researcher at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, United States, and one of the originators of the Semantic Web. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. Education Hendler completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree at Brown University (1986) with a thesis on automated planning and scheduling. He also has an MSc (1983) from Brown University, an MS (1981) in Cognitive Psychology from Southern Methodist University, and a BS (1978) from Yale University.
