Darkthrone
Darkthrone is a Norwegian extreme metal band from Kolbotn, Akershus. Formed in 1986 as a death metal band named Black Death, in 1991 Darkthrone embraced a black metal style influenced by Bathory and Celtic Frost and became one of the leading bands in the Norwegian black metal scene. Their first three black metal albums—'' A Blaze in the Northern Sky'' (1992), '' Under a Funeral Moon'' (1993) and '' Transilvanian Hunger'' (1994)—are sometimes dubbed the "Unholy Trinity". They are considered the peak of the band's career and to be among the most influential albums in black metal. Darkthrone has been a duo of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto since guitarist Zephyrous left the band in 1993. They have sought to remain outside the music mainstream. From 2006, their music strayed from the traditional black metal style and incorporated more elements of traditional heavy metal, punk, and speed metal, while more recent albums have also included doom metal. A Blaze In The Northern Sky
''A Blaze in the Northern Sky'' is the second studio album by Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone. It was recorded at Creative Studios in August 1991 and released on 26 February 1992 by Peaceville Records. It contained the band's first black metal recordings and is considered a classic within the genre. It was the first album of what fans dub the "Unholy Trinity", the other albums being '' Under a Funeral Moon'' and '' Transilvanian Hunger''. It was the last album to feature bassist Dag Nilsen. Background Darkthrone's first album, 1991's '' Soulside Journey'', was a Swedish-styled death metal release. After recording ''Soulside Journey'', the band began writing songs with more black metal traits. This yielded the instrumental demo '' Goatlord''. After recording ''Goatlord'', three of the band members—Fenriz, Nocturno Culto and Zephyrous—decided that they wanted to focus on making black metal music. Bassist Nilsen disliked this shift in direction, and quit the band. H ...

Black Metal
Black metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. Common traits include fast tempos, a shrieking vocal style, heavily distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, raw (lo-fi) recording, unconventional song structures, and an emphasis on atmosphere. Artists often appear in corpse paint and adopt pseudonyms. During the 1980s, several thrash metal and death metal bands formed a prototype for black metal. This "first wave" included bands such as Venom, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. A second wave arose in the early 1990s, spearheaded by Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Darkthrone, Burzum, Immortal, Emperor, Satyricon and Gorgoroth. The early Norwegian black metal scene developed the style of their forebears into a distinct genre. Norwegian-inspired black metal scenes emerged throughout Europe and North America, although some other scenes developed their own styles independently. Some prominent Swedish bands spawned during this second wav ...

Under A Funeral Moon
''Under a Funeral Moon'' is the third studio album by the Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone. It was recorded in June 1992 and released on 15 February 1993 by Peaceville Records. Written and recorded to create a "pure black metal album", it is the second of what is dubbed the band's "Unholy Trinity", along with ''A Blaze in the Northern Sky'' and ''Transilvanian Hunger''. ''Under a Funeral Moon'' was the last album on which guitarist Zephyrous (Ivar Enger) performed; he left the band shortly after its release. Background and recording Darkthrone's previous album, ''A Blaze in the Northern Sky'', is regarded as their first black metal release, although it kept some of the band's earlier death metal sound."Essential Black M ...

Transilvanian Hunger
''Transilvanian Hunger'' is the fourth studio album by Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone. It was released 17 February 1994 by Peaceville Records. Recording ''Transilvanian Hunger'' was the first Darkthrone album to be recorded as a duo (Nocturno Culto and Fenriz), which was a direct result of Zephyrous's departure from the band the previous year. Fenriz performed all instrumentation on the album, with Nocturno Culto adding vocals. As of 2018, this and ''Panzerfaust'' have been the only Darkthrone albums with this type of arrangement (although Fenriz also performs spoken word vocals on the ''Panzerfaust'' outro). ''Transilvanian Hunger'' was recorded on a 4-track recorder set up in Fenriz's bedroom (dubbed "Necrohell Studios" by the band). Lyrics for four of the album's songs were written by the Norwegian black metal musician Varg Vikernes, who performed solo as Burzum. Release and controversy The cover art was a black-and-white photograph of Fenriz with a candelabrum, ...

Early Norwegian Black Metal Scene
The early Norwegian black metal scene of the 1990s is credited with creating the modern black metal genre and produced some of the most acclaimed and influential artists in extreme metal. It attracted massive media attention when it was revealed that its members had been responsible for two murders, a suicide, and a wave of church burnings in Norway. The scene had an ethos and the core members referred to themselves as "The Black Circle" or "Black Metal Inner Circle". It consisted primarily of young men, many of whom gathered at the record shop Helvete ("Hell") in Oslo. In interviews, they voiced extreme anti-Christian and misanthropic views, presenting themselves as a cult-like group of militant Satanists who wanted to spread terror, hatred and evil. They adopted pseudonyms and appeared in photographs wearing "corpse paint" and wielding medieval weaponry. The scene was exclusive and created boundaries around itself, incorporating only those it deemed to be "trve" or committed. ...

Ivar Enger
Ivar Enger (born 1973), also known as "Zephyrous", is a Norwegian guitarist who played for the black metal band Darkthrone. He is credited as featuring on the band's first three albums; ''Soulside Journey'', ''A Blaze in the Northern Sky'' and ''Under a Funeral Moon'', as well as the '' Goatlord'' album; the rehearsal tapes of what was originally intended to be their second album (with later added vocals). He is said to have left due to delving into misanthropy, instead of generally leaving, as Darkthrone never had touring stress and he didn't leave prior because of the swift change from death metal to black metal, like other former member Dag Nilsen did. The band maintains that Zephyrous went into a forest and never returned. However, in a 2006 interview with the German website Voices From The Dark Side, Nocturno Culto claims he still has contact with Zephyrous and would like him to join the band as a guest on a few songs at some point. Very little information about Zephyrous ...

Soulside Journey
''Soulside Journey'' is the first studio album by Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone. It was released 13 January 1991 by Peaceville Records. It is notable as the band's only death metal album, before they became an integral part of the Norwegian black metal scene. Background The band's drummer, Fenriz, used the nickname "Hank Amarillo". Being that they had finally made it "big" and released an album, and due to his negativity toward the then-crop of death metal bands, Fenriz thought it would be appropriate to mockingly choose a "Western" name. Later pressings of the albums listed all of the band's pseudonyms rather than their real names. Reissue The album was remastered and reissued by Peaceville in 2003, as well as being repackaged in a cardboard digipak. The first chapter of a four-part video interview with Fenriz and Nocturno Culto, spanning the first four albums, was also included as bonus material. Track listing Credits Darkthrone * Nocturno Culto – vocals and lead ...
