Darcy Rivers Warren Cowan
Sir Darcy Rivers Warren Cowan (8 August 1885 – 9 June 1958) was an Australian medical practitioner and advocate of effective treatment of tuberculosis. Family The sixth of seven sons of James Cowan and Sarah Ann (née Warren) and brother of Gladys Rosalind Lewis. He married Effie Hewitt Cox, grand daughter of William Doudy, on 19 April 1910 at the home of his brother-in-law Alfred von Doussa, at Hahndorf, South Australia, Australia. They had no children. Education and career Cowan attended Prince Alfred College and the University of Adelaide. Cowan was in England at the start of World War I. Darcy served in the Royal Army Medical Corps and later the Australian Army Medical Corps Reserve as an honorary captain. He championed the effective treatment of tuberculosis, including the use of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccine. Norwood, South Australia
Norwood is a suburb of Adelaide, about east of the Adelaide city centre. The suburb is in the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, whose predecessor was the oldest South Australian local government municipality. History Before British colonisation of South Australia and subsequent European settlement, Norwood was inhabited by one of the groups who later collectively became known as the Kaurna peoples. Early settler Edward Stephens, who arrived in the colony in 1839, wrote: "Norwood and Kent Town were unknown then. The Adelaide Club is an exclusive gentlemen's club situated on North Terrace in the South Australian capital city of Adelaide. Founded in 1863, the club comprises members of the Adelaide Establishment. South Australian Club (1838–1843) An earlier club with similar aims and membership was the South Australian Club, founded in 1838, which purchased the Victoria Hotel from William Williams on Hindley Street for their premises. Members included Sturt, Morphett and Fisher. Membership was by ballot; joining fee 10 gns., membership 2 gns. ''per annum''. It folded in 1843 after failing financially. Estcourt House
Frederick Estcourt Bucknall (6 July 1835 – 4 June 1896) was an English-born publican, brewer and politician in the early days of the colony of South Australia. Life Bucknall was a member of the Estcourts of Estcourt, an influential old family, in the counties of Gloucester and Wiltshire, but born in London, where his father, William Bucknall of Crutched Friars, was Commodore of the Royal Thames Yacht Club. Shortly after he arrived in South Australia around 1860 via Melbourne, the original Torrens Dam was nearly completed, and he built a fleet of fine pleasure craft which he placed on the lake for hire, but the dam failed and was washed away, putting paid to his enterprise. He built a boatshed on the Port River to the south-east of where the Jervois Street bridge was later built, and created a great deal of interest in sculling on the Port River. James Brown (Australian Pastoralist)
James Brown ( 1819 – 7 February 1890) was a Scottish-born mass murderer and pastoralist of the South East of South Australia responsible for the Avenue Range Station massacre of between nine and eleven Aboriginal Australians. He was never convicted, despite the magistrate who committed him for trial observing that there was "little question of the butchery or the butcher". The Aboriginal Witnesses Act specified that a court could not base a conviction of a white man on the testimony of an Aboriginal witness alone. After his death, his widow Jessie Brown pursued several philanthropic ventures in his name. Two charitable institutions — the Kalyra Consumption Sanitorium at Belair and Estcourt House, near Grange were founded in his memory, and out of the proceeds of his estate.
