Dunn Butte
Dunn Butte, is a 5,714 foot-elevation-summit, a minor butte, along a line of three summits along the west drainage of Ninetyone Mile Canyon and Creek. From higher elevation-to-lower, they are Angels Gate, Dunn Butte, and Hawkins Butte. The bases of all three landforms are connected, and Dunn Butte is a south-southwest ridgeline, with the high point prominence at the northeast terminus. The massif of Wotans Throne is adjacent 1.0 mi northeast. The Cape Royal viewpoint is ~2.0 mi northeast; Dunn Butte is 2.0 north of the Colorado River, its drainage point. Geology The prominence geology of Dunn Butte is based on the massifs of Supai Group upon the cliff-former, (and therefore platform-former), of Redwall Limestone. Aubrey Peak Wilderness
The Aubrey Peak Wilderness is a wilderness administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Bright Angel Shale
The Cambrian Bright Angel Shale is the middle layer of the three member Tonto Group geologic feature. The 3-rock Tonto section famously sits upon the Great Unconformity because of the highly resistant cliffs of the base layer, vertical Tapeats Sandstone cliffs. The Bright Angel Shale is easily identified for two reasons. Its soft-greenish color stands out against the browns, reds, and whites of neighboring rock units. And secondly for its slope-forming character against mostly cliff-forming resistant rocks. The Bright Angel Shale is about thick at its maximum. It is a nonresistant slope-forming unit. Coconino Sandstone
Coconino Sandstone is a geologic formation named after its exposure in Coconino County, Arizona. This formation spreads across the Colorado Plateau province of the United States, including northern Arizona, northwest Colorado, Nevada, and Utah. This rock formation is particularly prominent in the Grand Canyon, where it is visible as a prominent white cliff-forming layer. The thickness of the formation varies due to regional structural features; in the Grand Canyon area it is only thick in the west, thickens to over in the middle and then thins to in the east. Either the Kaibab Limestone or Toroweap Formation overlies the Coconino Sandstone. The Coconino Sandstone is typically buff to white in color. Hermit Formation
The Permian Hermit Formation, also known as the Hermit Shale, is a nonresistant unit that is composed of slope-forming reddish brown siltstone, mudstone, and very fine-grained sandstone. Within the Grand Canyon region, the upper part of the Hermit Formation contains red and white, massive, calcareous sandstone and siltstone beds that exhibit low-angle cross-bedding. Beds of dark red crumbly siltstone fill shallow paleochannels that are quite common in this formation. The siltstone beds often contain poorly preserved plant fossils. The Hermit Formation varies in thickness from about in the eastern part of the Grand Canyon region to about in the region of Toroweap and Shivwits Plateaus. Esplanade Sandstone
The Lower Permian Esplanade Sandstone is a cliff-forming, resistant sandstone, dark red, geologic unit found in the Grand Canyon. The rock unit forms a resistant shelf in the west Grand Canyon, south side of the Colorado River, at the east of the Toroweap Fault, down-dropped to west, southeast of Toroweap Overlook (North Rim, at Lava Falls), and west of Havasupai. The red, sandstone shelf, The Esplanade is about 20-mi long. Thor Temple is a -elevation summit located in the Grand Canyon, in Coconino County of northern Arizona, United States. It is situated west-northwest of Cape Royal on the canyon's North Rim, east of Brahma Temple, and north-northwest of Wotans Throne. It rises above the Colorado River in . According to the Köppen climate classification system, Thor Temple is located in a cold semi-arid climate zone. Thor Temple is named for Thor, the hammer-wielding god associated with lightning, thunder, and storms in Germanic mythology, and son of Wotan. This name was applied by geologist François E. Cape Royal
Cape Royal is a 7,880+-cliff-elevation summit located in the eastern Grand Canyon, Coconino County, Arizona, Coconino County of northern Arizona, Southwestern United States, United States. It is the southernmost viewpoint of the North Rim, viewing from north-northeast, south, west, southwest. Its next viewpoint northwest is Honan Point, with Thor Temple directly below. Directly east-northeast is the major viewing point of Cape Final, which gives views almost directly north. The 1/2 mile Cape Royal Trail starts at the parking lot and ends at the overlook at Cape Royal.
