The Drosophila Research Conference, informally known as "the fly meeting", is an annual meeting of ''Drosophila'' researchers held in North America since 1958. Drosophila
''Drosophila'' () is a genus of flies, belonging to the family Drosophilidae, whose members are often called "small fruit flies" or (less frequently) pomace flies, vinegar flies, or wine flies, a reference to the characteristic of many species to linger around overripe or rotting fruit. They should not be confused with the Tephritidae, a related family, which are also called fruit flies (sometimes referred to as "true fruit flies"); tephritids feed primarily on unripe or ripe fruit, with many species being regarded as destructive agricultural pests, especially the Mediterranean fruit fly. One species of ''Drosophila'' in particular, '' D. melanogaster'', has been heavily used in research in genetics and is a common model organism in developmental biology. Dan Lindsley
Dan Lindsley (October 13, 1925 – June 22, 2018) was an American geneticist known for his '' Drosophila'' research. Lindsley was born on October 13, 1925, and raised in California. He attended the University of Texas while serving in the United States Navy during World War II, and pursued a medical degree at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. A. B. Griffen, whom Lindsley first met in Texas, convinced him to transfer to the University of Missouri School of Medicine. There, Lindsley left medicine for biology. After earning his bachelor's and master's degree, Lindsley began doctoral study at the California Institute of Technology in 1949, and completed the program in 1952. Subsequently, he worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Lindsley began teaching at University of California, San Diego in 1967, and retired in 1991.
